  Leonardo DaVinci
Possibly he was glad to be relieved of the job by a young genius joining his workshop and it was enough to have one good painter in the firm of 'Verrocchio and Co.' It's also true that this was Verrocchio's last known painting.
Verrocchio's style was very much traditional for the day; distant plains and hills with the formalised rocks and the occasional scattered tree, often with a somewhat plastic look.
Verrocchio's portions of the picture are in the traditional egg tempera which produced a surface similar to enamel but demanded strict demarcation lines between colours.

In 1476 Verrocchio modelled and cast the fine but too realistic bronze statue of David, now in the B~srgello (Florence); and in the following year he completed one of the reliefs of the magnificent silver altar-frontal of the Florentine baptistery, that representing the Beheading of St John.
Verrocchios other works in the precious metals are now lost, but Vasari records that he made many elaborate pieces of plate and jewelry, such as morses for copes, as well as a series of silver statues of the Apostles for the popes chapel in the Vatican.
Verrocchio died in Venice in 1488, and was buried in the church of St Ambrogio in Florence.

Andrea del Verrocchio (1435-1488) born, Andrea di Michele Cione, was one of the finest, Early Renaissance, Florentine sculptors..
After his training under the goldsmith Giuliano del Verrocchio, whose name he adopted, he went on his own, trying himself and achieving success in different fields of fine arts: in jewelry, sculpture and painting, but it was in the field of sculpture that he excelled most.
Thus in the painting of Verrocchio’s, Baptism of Christ (1475), which is considered to be the finest representation of the subject in Early Renaissance Florentine art, evidence is clearly apparent, especially in the handling of the face of the kneeling angel, of the assistance of Leonardo, at that time active in Verrocchio’s workshop.

Verrocchio, although hardly one of the great creative or inventive forces in the art of his age at Florence, was a first-rate craftsman ailike as goldsmith, sculptor and painter, and particularly distinguished as a teacher.
He had soon learnt all that Verrocchio had to teachmore than all, if we are to believe the oft-told tale of the figure, or figures, executed by the pupil in the picture of Christ's Baptism designed by the master for the monks of Vallombrosa.
Up till 1477 he is still spoken of as a pupil or apprentice of Verrocchio; but in that year he seems to have been taken into special favor by Lorenzo the Magnificent, and to have worked as an independent artist under his patronage until 1482-1483.

Verrocchio's reputation was widespread in the second half of the 15th century and many well-known artists of the Italian Renaissance studied painting and sculpture at his Florentine studio.
Other paintings ascribed to Verrocchio are the Madonna in the Staatliche Museen, Berlin, the Tobias and the Angel in the National Gallery in London, and the altarpiece in Argiano, with Christ on the Cross between St Jerome and St Anthony.
Verrocchio's reputation as one of the great relief sculptors of the 15th century was clearly established with his cenotaph, or memorial, in the cathedral at Pistoia, to a Tuscan ecclesiastical dignitary, Cardinal Niccolò Forteguerri.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Andrea Del Verrocchio
The "Baptism" marked an epoch in the history of Italian painting, because the accuracy of design and the refinement of the model were an innovation whereby Verrocchio broke with the school of the frescoists, less correct and broader in execution.
Verrocchio was perhaps the greatest artist of the second half of the fifteenth century.
Hence Verrocchio's powerful influence over painting; his studio was the centre of resistance to the invasion of antique influence; and his pupils Lorenzo di Credi, Perugino, and Leonardo da Vinci continued to spread the doctrine of the Florentine School.

The Baptism of Christ by VERROCCHIO, Andrea del
Commissioned by the monastery church of San Salvi in Florence, where remained until 1530, the picture was executed in the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio, whose style is well defined by the figures of Christ and Baptist.
The special fame of the work is however due to the Verrocchio's pupil who helped him paint the picture: in the blond angel on the left and in the landscape above is in fact recognizable the hand of Leonardo, the very young Leonardo, present in Verrocchio's workshop around 1470.
The composition is attributed to Verrocchio, although there can be no definite answer as to which artist produced it.

Leonardo da Vinci (1452 - 1519) Italian Renaissance Artist
It is at this stage, that it is possible Leonardo took a managerial role regarding commissions in Verrocchio's studio, as several paintings from the years between 1472 and 1477 are regularly attributed to Leonardo.
Although there is reminiscence of Verrocchio's style in these pieces, the composition and atmosphere of the Annunciation and the compelling facial expression of the Ginevra are close enough to Leonardo's artistic intentions, justifying claims of his direct participation in these works.
After leaving Verrocchio's studio, though his talent was widely known, Leonardo gained a reputation for not delivering on his commissions, and it is possible that this is why he did not recieve much official work.
