DVD Verdict Review - The Basketball Diaries
The one big problem with The Basketball Diaries is simply that we've seen it all before—the high school student who's a whiz at sports or scholastics, but wastes his talents, allowing himself to be drawn into the drug culture.
In The Basketball Diaries, he gives a dynamic performance as the disintegrating Jim Carroll, particularly in his depiction of the character's degeneration into total heroin addiction.
The Basketball Diaries is not a particularly great film, suffering from familiarity and uneven direction, and lacking a proper temporal context.

The Thresher Online: `Basketball Diaries' tells of an artist's sordid youth (September 8, 1995)
The Basketball Diaries is a vivid biographical movie based on Jim Carroll's cathartic diaries, completed when he was only 17.
We watch Jim disintegrate from a handsome, well-muscled high school senior and All-American High School Basketball Team hopeful into a chalky-lipped, emaciated and bruised dropout who ends up so desparate that he has to prostitute himself to middle-aged men in order to earn enough money to be able to afford his next high.
The Basketball Diaries may have a great soundtrack, with songs like the Doors' "Riders on the Storm," and P.J. Harvey's "Down By the Water," but the well-chosen songs are some of the only places where any upbeatness lurks in this film.

 RollingStone.com: The Basketball Diaries Review
In Diaries, he gets his first starring role and slam-dunks the sucker to victory even when Bryan Golubuff's conventional script and Scott Kalvert's glossy direction threaten to turn a stinging true story into a TV-ish I Was a Teen-age Junkie.
Jim robs old ladies, fights, stumbles onto the court in a stoned daze, gets expelled, loses his chance at a basketball career, hustles "old queers" in public toilets to feed his habit and weeps when his mother (an overemphatic Lorraine Bracco) locks him out of their apartment and her life.
Nothing so structured happens in the diaries, which are a series of brilliant fragments with little patience for sentiment, self-pity and cautionary drug messages.

The Basketball Diaries . Tucson Weekly . 06-22-95
The Basketball Diaries is the story of a young man's downward spiral into addiction, and how he hurt a lot of people along the way.
What saves The Basketball Diaries from becoming unwatchable is the intensely watchable Leonard DiCaprio, an actor with so much raw talent it's thoroughly tempting to wonder what kind of movie this would be with a three-dimensional script.
This leaves The Basketball Diaries less a character study than a gritty late-night lark in the same category as films like The Bad Lieutenant or Killing Zoe--other pictures in which the protagonist spends most of his time in a stupor.

At least this was the impression given by media crusade, inspired by the series of school shootings in late 1990s America, for which the young perpetrators had allegedly found inspiration in violent films from Hollywood.
The latter proves to be his undoing - his basketball skills quickly vanish, he leaves school and home and is soon forced to leave on the street where he commits various crimes and sells his body in order to pay for his heroin habit.
While the former dealt with the dark world of heroin addiction with much more details and style than THE BASKETBALL DIARIES, the latter was much more convincing in the depiction of modern teenager's alienation from society.

This is a coming-of-age story, composed of excerpts from Jim Carroll's diary, written during his young adulthood on the streets of New York City.
The earlier entries are crude, but extremely funny -- Carroll and his basketball teammates are constantly getting into trouble of one kind or another as they move through the seedier side of mid-60's NYC.
The later entries are sadder, and much less funny; Carroll's small heroin habit becomes a full-fledged addiction and he resorts to increasingly desperate measures to find the money to buy drugs.

The Basketball Diaries seems to play out like a novelistic Thirteen to me, but its a hell of a lot better, while not a perfect book (the zone-outs kinda lower my opinion).
Thirteen seems to speak thats it characters are the ideal teenagers, and the Basketball Diaries simply preaches that this is the life in that area, in that zone of time, and that indeed makes things much more likable for a teenager like myself.

Jackson and Bruno Kirby, Jr., with Leo in the lead role as Carroll.
Shot for a low budget on the streets of New York, the film has a gritty, stark feel aided by its equally gritty subject matter.
Drawn by his love for roles that take him to one edge or another of the human condition-in-extremis, playing Jim Carroll gave Leo an open field in which to run free… and, once again, run he does.

Very loosely based on the memoir of the same name, The Basketball Diaries transposes the late '60s adolescence of writer/artist Jim Carroll to some unspecified time period at least 15 years later, further confusing the timeframe with three decades of rock music, some by Carroll himself.
Jim (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his Catholic school chums are on the hottest basketball team in New York, but their friend Bobby (Michael Imperioli) languishes in the hospital with leukemia.
Mark Wahlberg appears as one of Jim's basketball and drug buddies, while Carroll himself makes a memorable cameo as an addict who describes the almost Catholic rituals of shooting heroin.
