rage against the machine’s last album of original material shows much promise, unfortunately it was the bands last album.
a good portion of the album is made up of standard rockers that could have easily been put on rage’s last effort, evil empire.
“maria” is the other standout track on the album along with “calm like a bomb” and “mic check.” the song features de la rocha’s best rapping by far, in part because his lyrics actually take on form.

Starting with Testify it opens the album very well, with the insecant ranting of 'who controls the present now...' it tells you that the album is going to be good.
The album is consistent and none of the songs on the album seem to let it down, sleep now in the fire is possibly their best song ever, which is quite an acheivement, it has such a catchy riff and it is undescribable.
Battle of Los Angeles may very well be the commercial album, but you need to get it if your a fan of their material.

But like some of the best albums born in turmoil, this album is a triumph, not an embarassment.

A perfectly fucked up postcard from the edge of the millenium, The Battle of Los Angeles picks up where 1996's Evil Empire left off, painting fiery pictures of the disinfranchised and the white hand that keeps them down.
But however much Rage's sound is connected to De La Rocha's voice and free-flowing delivery, the groundbreaking sound of Battle of Los Angeles comes courtesy of Morello.
Morello has used the three years in between albums to build his arsenal to include the spacey ambience of The Edge, the experimental scratching of Jimi Hendrix and the classic power riffing of Jimmy Page.

In the words of Tom Morello, the album is "heavier, super-hard rocking, rhythmic with deep hip-hop grooves, and some really unique sonic slap-back funk" - a sound that not only takes the popular form that Rage originally created to the next step, but takes it an entire country mile further.

Rolling Stone : The Battle Of Los Angeles : Review
The Battle of Los Angeles offers no change lyrically from Rage's two previous albums: There are no love songs, just abused altar boys; no cries of alienation, just calls to arms for peasant Mexican rebels.
The band's power on its past two albums has come from the combination of Tom Morello's guitars -- as riffy as Southern rock, as dirty as grunge, as insistent as hip-hop scratching -- and Zack de la Rocha's fire-and-brimstone rapping.
But at last, with The Battle of Los Angeles, they've managed to win a war within -- one in which the band's notoriously feuding members have come together to produce a sound that's not quite louder than a bomb but that's definitely as loud as Led Zeppelin II.
