Jaws (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the film, the police chief of Amity Island, a summer resort town, tries to protect beachgoers from the predations of a huge great white shark by closing the beach, only to be overruled by the money-grubbing town council.
The film stars Roy Scheider as police chief Martin Brody, Richard Dreyfuss as marine biologist Matt Hooper, Robert Shaw as the shark hunter Quint, Lorraine Gary as Brody's wife Ellen, and Murray Hamilton as the greedy Mayor Vaughn.
In the novel, Hooper is killed by the shark during the dive to examine it, with the intention of killing it with a bangstick.

Beaches (1988) - A Review by David Nusair
The film is packed with predictable plot points and melodramatic performances, something that the average viewer will have a hard time overlooking.
This leaves most of the responsibility for the film's effectiveness on the shoulders of Midler and Hershey, though Midler does seem to receive the most screen time (this is in addition to the many songs by Midler on the film's soundtrack).
Beaches just may be the ultimate "chick flick," and on that level, it undoubtedly works.

 Beaches - Movie Review
The film's only real plot point comes in the last act (spoilers ahead if you care), when Hershey's character croaks on us, sticking Midler with her daughter.
Rather than establish her legacy as a serious actress, the film stands as a testament to the creepiness of collagen lip injections, which she pioneered during the movie.
Beaches is supposed to be about how true friendship is eternal -- that if you die, you'll always have somebody to take care of your illegitimate child.

 Beaches: Special Edition DVD Review
Bette Midler is unquestionably the film's star and, in typical fashion for the actress, carries it with ease, even if the comicly aggressive character isn't much of a stretch from her usual roles.
Beaches is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and is enhanced for 16x9 televisions.
Though Marshall may be a little too praising of the film early on, he quickly settles in and shares what is obviously a knowledgeable command of the film, something that not all directors seem to have.

 DVDFILE.COM: Beaches Review
Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey turn in excellent performances as the dominant and recessive halves of the female-friendship duo at the center of the film, but there are so many mistresses and complicated relationships along the path of the film that it's hard for the picture to retain any kind of dramatic integrity.
So at the end of the day, Beaches is one of those movies that you love in spite of both yourself and the film itself.
Dialogue sounds okay and the film's almost constant music cues are presented with fullness and finesse, but they're not spread out in any capacity.

Beaches Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Beaches captures some of the moments that make women's friendships special: the ability to pick up where you left off, the ability to be there in a crisis, the obligatory fight over a man and realization that the man isn't worth it, the mutual envy when friends take different paths.
In 1988, few films had explored female friendships in depth (Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias followed shortly thereafter); today, the movie reads as one long string of clichés.
The American Film Institute ranked "Wind Beneath my Wings" #44 in their "100 Songs… 100 Years" series, and one of the extras is Bette Midler's explanation for why the song was such a success.

The film was released to general audiences in 1966, but was actually screened in its original 16-mm format right here at the Beaches on Saturday, July 9, 1964, at the old Beach Theatre.
The 95-minute film about an around-the-world journey by two surfers in search of the perfect wave, didn't have a soundtrack in 1964 so Brown gave a live narration on the Beach Theatre stage.
Brown also screened the film for two weeks in “landlocked” Wichita, Kan., according to magicsurfbus.com, and for a year at the Kips Bay Theatre in Manhattan (New York, not Kansas) before it was picked up for distribution.

Beaches is the Goliath of those epic '80s melodramas, squashing patience and dignity and tact.
As Hershey is dying beachside during one of the film's numerous endings, the camera is fixed solely on Bette as "Wind Beneath My Wings" soars over the soundtrack.

If you are a filmmaker searching for creativity, great crews and talent, an abundance of unique locations ranging from beaches to swamps to skylines and a community that is willing to help, then Miami is the place to make your script come to life.
In 2005 the three Greater Miami Film Offices launched One Stop Permitting, an internet based simplified film permit application process, which resulted in a big draw for filmmakers and producers and part of the reason MovieMaker moved Miami up one notch in the ranking from number eight last year to seven this year.
In fact, the Greater Miami film offices not only support and nurture the local Independent Filmmaking community but also aggressively target Indie Filmmakers by participating at the IFP Market in New York, and attending and distributing materials at Sundance, South by Southwest and other film festivals.

 BEACHES - SPECIAL EDITION DVD
An orgy of emotional climaxes ensues as the two wax and wane: CC achieves fame and then loses it; Hillary motions towards becoming a lefty lawyer before accepting a loveless marriage to an upper class twit; and fortunes change for the pair more often than most people refresh their underwear.
Thus the film falls into the big trap of the chick-flick: a tendency towards formlessness, a mere succession of random hardships that go off like explosions in a Schwarzenegger flick.
Buried under the emotional pornography is a narrative line about two women who depend on each other rather than on men--and while some of the men get unfairly trashed (such as a passed-around theatre-director beau played by John Heard), there's the unusual sense that this is a movie dealing with the primacy of female friendship.
