The Beatles Story from The Quarrymen to Anthology and beyond, their history and future
Their story is so mythic in its sweep — that it's difficult to summarize their career without restating clichés that have already been digested by tens of millions of rock fans.
Relentlessly imaginative and experimental, the Beatles grabbed a hold of the international mass consciousness in 1964 and never let go for the next six years, always staying ahead of the pack in terms of creativity, but never losing their ability to communicate their increasingly sophisticated ideas to a mass audience.
When the Beatles premiered their hippie anthem "All You Need Is Love" as part of a worldwide TV broadcast, they had been truly anointed as spokespersons for their generation (a role they had not actively sought), and it seemed they could do no wrong.

The Beatles - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Beatles were one of the first major pop acts to compose most of their own material, and their evolving repertoire spanned many genres (including ballads, ska, psychedelic music, blues, heavy metal and country music).
The Beatles created a sensation in late 1963 in the UK (the phenomenon was dubbed "Beatlemania" by the British press), notable for the hordes of screaming and swooning young women the group inspired.
The Beatles were also fond of Little Richard and some of their songs (especially in the early repertoire) featured falsetto calls similar to his, notably on their version of his song "Long Tall Sally".

The long and winding road - The Boston Globe
Even though the Beatles story is well known, Spitz has fleshed it out fully, revealing the flawed, singularly creative human beings behind that lovable moptop image.
He traces the Beatles from childhood to their 1970 breakup and suggests that what followed -- their individual recording careers, the murder of John Lennon, George Harrison's death -- is far less interesting.
Spitz makes it clear that Lennon's drive and cold ambition got the Beatles off the ground, but he also suggests that McCartney was at least as talented, was a better musician, and kept things together (albeit in his own condescending way) in the middle and toward the end.

For me, the most interesting period in Beatles history is the band's later years, 1968 to 1970.
It was during this time that my favourite Beatles albums, the self-titled or 'White Album' and Abbey Road, were recorded, and the band proved that their musical experimentation wasn't limited to (admittedly wonderful) psychedelia.

The Beatles are probably the most documented band in the history of music, which isn’t particularly surprising considering the dizzying success they had, the likes of which undoubtedly will never be seen again (sorry Scandal'us, you'll just have to deal with it).
Needless to say though, squishing the "entire" history of The Beatles into one measly hour is somewhat akin to parking a Jumbo Jet in a matchbox.
Ironically this is in some ways more useful than the actual included programme, giving a potted history of The Beatles' career via 60 diary entries, and even occasionally mentioning the actual music.
