		The original vehicle for social and political critic Michael Franti (later of the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy and Spearhead), the Beatnigs used elements of industrial music and punk on their lone album, a 1988 self-titled effort for Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacles label.
		After its release and a remix of the single "Television" by Adrian Sherwood, the group broke up; Franti, however, returned to music three years later with his Disposable Heroes project, an act in much the same vein as the Beatnigs but with more ties to rap.

		By 1990, Franti had turned to the McLuhan-like electronic scrawl and cut-up ad/art of Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, a welcome relief from the cartoon savagery of gangsta rap.
		For me, the Beatnigs were a guerilla street theater band.

		His first band, The Beatnigs, put out an eponymous record in 1988 that melded chainsaw-on-metal industrial noise to tight and furious percussion, threw in densely sampled "found" sounds and topped it off with a hip-hop/punk attitude.
		Their album Hypocrisy Is The Greatest Luxury took the Beatnigs' radical politics and set it to funky, P.E. on steroids rap tracks.
		Disposable Heroes scored their biggest "hit" with a reworked version of a Beatnigs song, "Television (The Drug Of A Nation)," and toured with U2 on their Zoo TV extravaganza.

		The Beatnigs broke up after the release of their album, but original members Michael Franti and Rono Tse - a noise musician who uses such implements as angle grinders, tire rims, chains, and sheet metal to add rhythmic textures to beats - went on to become the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy.
		The continuity from Beatnigs to Disposable Heroes is also evident in the updated version of the Beatnigs' song, "Television, the Drug of the Nation." Another nod to their origins was their cover of the Dead Kennedys' recurring song, "California Uber Alles."
		But even back with the Beatnigs, it seemed like you were trying to find that balance between a political outlook and inner spiritual growth.

	Sierra Nevada World Music Festival 1998
		Folks who are into "alternative" music may recall Michael Franti, the lanky 6'6" former college basketball player (Michael Franti played for the SF Dons at the University of San Francisco) as the lead singer/rapper for a group called the Beatnigs.
		Not only did the name cause people to raise an eyebrow, but the fact that so few African Americans were involved in industrial music laid claim to Franti's willingness to embrace all types of music.
		Hence, it was no surprise that when the Beatnigs broke up and Franti and former Beatnig Rono Tse formed the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, folks tooks to them immediately.

		Before that, Michael Franti was active in The Disposable Heroes of Hiphopracy and The Beatnigs.
		We toured Europe twice with the Beatnigs and three times with The Disposable Heroes and I've probably done twelve tours with Spearhead over here.
		I guess my main message is that music probably won't change the world overnight but music can help us make it through a difficult time.
