But, in violation of all statistical norms that I've even learned, they plot only the regression curve and do not show the scatter of variation around the curve, so their graphs do not show anything about the strength of the relationships—that is, the amount of variation in social factors explained by IQ and socioeconomic status.
I am delighted that The Bell Curve was written–so that its errors could be exposed, for Herrnstein and Murray are right to point out the difference between public and private agendas on race, and we must struggle to make an impact on the private agendas as well.
But The Bell Curve is scarcely an academic treatise in social theory and population genetics.

  IQ Since "The Bell Curve"
N The Bell Curve, Herrnstein and Murray set out to prove that American society was becoming increasingly meritocratic, in the sense that wealth and other positive social outcomes were being distributed more and more according to people's intelligence and less and less according to their social backgrounds.
Just as with The Bell Curve, only a small portion of Herrnstein's 1971 article dealt with differences among groups, and only a portion of that portion dealt with possible genetic influences on those differences; and, just as with The Bell Curve, these were the passages that received the greatest attention.
O THE extent that it is not simply political, the debate that followed The Bell Curve and "IQ," and that lies at the heart of Gould's critique in The Mismeasure of Man, is over the very existence and coherence of general intelligence.

The Bell Curve - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bell Curve is a controversial, best-selling 1994 book by Richard J. Herrnstein and Charles Murray exploring the role of intelligence in American life.
Perhaps the most prominent critic of The Bell Curve was the late Stephen Jay Gould, who in 1996 released a revised and expanded edition of his 1981 work The Mismeasure of Man intended to refute many of The Bell Curve's claims regarding race and intelligence.
The Bell Curve provided the first discussion of the Flynn effect aimed at a general audience, and was the first work to refer to it by that name (pp.

Perhaps the most important section of The Bell Curve is Part II, "Cognitive Classes and Social Behavior." It describes the relationship of IQ to poverty, school-dropout rates, unemployment, divorce, illegitimacy, welfare, parenting, crime, and citizenship.

However, it is the opinion of the present author that three major pillars of TBC - the genetic contribution to IQ, the importance of IQ (and lack of importance of other factors) for predicting life outcomes, and the relative fixedness of cognitive ability -- have sustained major damage during the past five years.
Comparing TBC's contentions about the importance of IQ in determining life outcomes to what newer analyses reveal is made somewhat difficult by the fact that observers exhibit a fair amount of disagreement over exactly what Herrnstein and Murray (1994) were saying.
Even by the time TBC first came out, commentators had seized upon the fact that the statistical relationships reported by Herrnstein and Murray (1994) between IQ and outcomes such as poverty and crime were small or modest in magnitude (e.g., Gould, 1994).

The area between the curve and the horizontal axis is exactly 1.
The curve will be approximately the normal curve, though shifted right (I'd guess about 140 pounds worth) and stretched horizontally by a factor of about, say, 5 lbs [averages tend to cancel out extremes of variation].
The normal curve is often called the Gaussian distribution, after Carl Friedrich Gauss, who discovered many of its properties.

Most of The Bell Curve's analysis is devoted to proving that IQ has more predictive power than parental "socio-economic status." But Herrnstein and Murray's method of figuring socioeconomic status seems designed to low-ball its influence, as Case Study Four explains.
The chapter of The Bell Curve on policies that might be able to overcome the fate of a low IQ focuses mainly on whether early-childhood programs like Head Start (most of which aren't run with raising IQ as their primary goal) can raise IQ significantly over the long term, and sorrowfully concludes that they can't.
