 'The Benchwarmers' - Zap2it
"The Benchwarmers" is a movie for anyone who ever saw "Revenge of the Nerds," and wondered what it would be like if the nerds weren't particularly good at math, and had to try softball.
"The Benchwarmers" casts Schneider as a California gardener who drags his loser buddies David Spade and Jon Heder into the world of little league, the better to teach those smug, well-financed hotshots -- and their jock parents -- some valuable life lessons by trouncing them on the field.
But "The Benchwarmers" really exists as a staging area for a series of odd, silly and mostly engaging jokes at the expense of Spade and Heder, and a propping-up of geeks in general.

THE BENCHWARMERS features two separate running audio commentaries; the first is with director Dennis Dugan, while the second includes actors David Spade and Jon Heder.
THE BENCHWARMERS is a perfectly enjoyable eighty-minute time waster, which will appeal to fans of the other movies that have come out of Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions.

At 80 minutes, "The Benchwarmers" is so mercifully short that the movie is already at the semi-finals of the season by the time the first act feels like it should be ending.
If there can be a compliment paid to "The Benchwarmers" outside of perhaps the catchy soundtrack, it is that the picture manages to never be boring even when it is a complete waste of talent, film stock and the audience's time and money.
The sad thing is that Sony Pictures and Revolution Studios, who refused to screen this in advance for the press because they know they have trash on their hands and also know that kids will go see it anyway, are laughing all the way to the bank.

 Blu-ray Review: The Benchwarmers | High-Def Digest
Certainly, Heder would have never landed 'The Benchwarmers' if it wasn't for 'Napoleon Dynamite.' He's also more of the supporting player here -- this baseball-dingbat comedy is really a vehicle for the aging shtick of Rob Schneider and David Spade.
Seeing that 'The Benchwarmers' is the cinematic equivalent of a Twinkie, perhaps it will be looked back upon as a transition point in Heder's ascension to a leading comic actor.
Nothing here is memorable, though they do attempt to expand on the character of Gus' wife a bit, who was pretty underutilized in the final cut.

The Benchwarmers tells the story of three guys (Schneider, Spade, Heder) who try to make up for their lack of athleticism when they were younger by forming a three-man baseball team to challenge a full squad of elementary school baseballers.
Yes, the plot is terrible, some of the jokes are terrible, and Rob Schneider's bizarre from-the-neck-up oxblood tan is terrible, but the movie as a whole is a more-than-acceptable addition to the genre of shameless and hastily made American comedy.
From the beginning to its very end, The Benchwarmers seems to be struggling to justify its own existence.

The movie was incredible everybody in the audience seemed to love it.There are lots of funny scenes like john heider unintentienly throwing his baseball bat at squirrels. The benchwarmers arent really good at baseball only Gus is talented. But the rest of the team gets better, they play playoffs at one point.
The humor is perhaps a little more clear cut (and a little cruder) than the very dry delivery presented in Napoleon Dynamite, but The Benchwarmers still delivers in full the same nerd-oriented humor that many people fell in love with.

'The Benchwarmers' - MOVIE REVIEW - Los Angeles Times - calendarlive.com
The logical extension of such a mind-set is "The Benchwarmers," in which the aforementioned Clark, weaselly video-store clerk Richie (David Spade) and regular-Joe handyman Gus (Rob Schneider) team up to play against thuggish elementary-school-age baseball players.
Gus is the only one who's got skills while Clark and Richie are so clueless about the game that by the time they get their first hit, they don't know which way to run to first base.
One supposes "The Benchwarmers" justifies its existence in submitting a plea for tolerating, even respecting, school outcasts everywhere.
