Changing the conSception of garage rock - Undefined Section   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Bent Scepters frontman Doug Roberson likes to live by the words of Frank Sinatra and his beloved Rat Pack.
When the Scepters play bars, Roberson hopes their lively shows are a form of "escape" to concertgoers who will cast off the fetters of everyday life and unleash their grooving sides.
The strangest benefit concert the Bent Scepters played was for two Iowa City women who were trying unsuccessfully to get loans from local banks in order to build a hair salon.

The Bent Scepters formed in Iowa City during 1991 and has been a prevailing force there ever since.
The Bent Scepters will be bringing its "high performance garage rock and top fuel R&B with a hot-rod angle" to an all-ages show at the M-Shop Saturday night.

"The Bent Scepters" are an amazingly catchy garage pop band that sounds like it was shot forward in time to take advantage of better production techniques.
Echoing psychedelic sounds of bands ranging from Britpoppers to the LA underground, "Blind Date With Destiny" is chock full of cheesy organ, crusty vocals and single-string Rickenbacker guitar runs.

They were, and still are, The Bent Scepters, a modern take on 1960s garage pop rock 'n' roll with hints of early R&B. Some have dubbed it "secret-agent-garage-surf," and many have tried to file it under something, but like any recycled product, it's hard to figure out exactly what it is now.
The Scepters know they're not breaking new ground musically, and they've never claimed to be musical geniuses.
Oddly enough, just like the bands of the early '60s, the Bent Scepters have evolved in their sound over the past decade.

Music: Rhythm & Views (Tucson Weekly . 03-16-98)
SWIPING ITS NAME from an obscure Kingsmen track, the Bent Scepters recreate this splendid mid-'60s garage and psychedelic musical landscape by endorsing diverse elRoom With, Ventures, and Question Mark and the Mysterians, and then consolidating them into its peerless brand of '90s paisley garage pop.
The primary musical strength of the Bent Scepters centers around Pat White, and his vibrant Farfisa organ on the Them-sounding "Open Up Your Mind" and Bevis Frond cover, "Chinese Burn." Regrettably, the Scepters lack the ferocity incited by the likes of current garage lynchpins the Makers, Headcoats and Fiends.
The fresh-scrubbed Scepters would probably feel more at ease playing at a friend's wedding or bar mitzvah--not in front of a biker bar packed full of inebriated serial killers.

The Diplomats Of Solid Sound - Pandora Internet Radio
Reviving the lightly funky but deeply soulful instrumental RandB sound of Booker T and the MG's and The Meters, The Diplomats of Solid Sound not only prove that there's still a place of the mighty Hammond Organ in 21st Century pop music, but confirms the existence of dance-floor filling soul music in Iowa City, Iowa.
The Diplomats of Solid Sound originally formed in 1998 as a side project of retro-rockers The Bent Scepters, with three members of the Scepters -- bassist Dustin Connor, guitarist Doug Roberson, and drummer Jim Viner -- teaming up with keyboardist Pat White.
After the Bent Scepters called it a day in 1999, Connor, Roberson and Viner decided to continue performing as The Diplomats of Solid Sound, and replaced White with Nate "Count" Basinger, though White occasionally guested on the band's recordings.

The Bent Scepters made their debut in 1996 with Blind Date with Destiny, an album similar to the recordings of such bands as Weezer.
While the record suffers from too many instrumentals and occasionally naïve lyrics, it is clear that the group didn't have any intentions other than having the listeners have as much fun as they were having while recording.

The group was formed as a side-project by members of another 60s retro style group from Iowa City called the Bent Scepters.
The latter group dissolved, or perhaps was transformed into The Diplomats with the addition of organist Basinger.
