SCREEN IT! ARTISTIC REVIEW: THE BEST MAN
Comedy/Drama: As a first time author plans to be the best man at his friend's wedding, he hopes that the groom and his other college friends don't recognize themselves and their past in the characters of his soon to be published novel.
Although the film doesn't completely manage to escape such trappings -- the men see women as sexual objects, some "exotic" and scantily clad dancers perform at a bachelor party and there's plenty of cussing and stereotypical sexual banter -- those moments are surrounded by a mostly intelligent script featuring nicely developed and delineated characters.
While the film isn't anything particularly earthshaking or groundbreaking and the ending goes on a bit too long, it may just be remembered, like other ensemble films before it such as "The Big Chill" and "Diner," as the film that "launched" many careers into higher orbits.

The Best Man is an unabashedly mainstream romantic comedy about an upwardly mobile group of twentysomethings who are making choices about love and work that will determine the next 40 years of their lives.
Maybe The Best Man is escapist entertainment plain and simple, or maybe it's a subtle act of revenge on a century of American movies that painted the world as white, or maybe it's an accurate depiction of the self-protective mindset of a generation.
The best man is not only the film's leading man but also the straight man for most of its comedy.

A best man at a wedding comes together with his old college buddies a couple of days before the exchange of the vows, and is suddenly placed under a magnifying glass when his first novel (To be launched on Oprah, thank you very much!) gets premiered by all of his friends.
best from his slick role in one of the best movies of 1999, GO, but many others may remember him from his role of Benny, the evil landlord in the Tony Award winning stage production of "Rent", or his re-occurring role as Adrian "Sugar" Hill on TV "The Guiding Light" from 1997 to 1998.
I am often very critical of films that produce such gendered language as illustrated in "The Best Man." Women that chose to focus on their career rather than work as domestic engineers, and breeding objects to their husband are NOT necessarily "One step from lesbian," as Lance suggests in the film.

Though there were a few films that stuck out from the rest of the crowd, we will not be looking back on 1999 as being one of the best years for films.
Filmed as a documentary, the film does have some parts that make you try to figure out what comes next, but beyond the story, there is not much that can make this film last through the years.
This is a must-see film, and it is one that showed the range that both actors would use to their advantage in the years to come.

Motivation and backstory are beside the point, though there is the vague suggestion that Vann's victims are, as he sees it, begging to be put out of their misery.
Shifty and paced like a reverie, the film lodges itself inside its protagonist's head without attempting to make sense of what it discovers—case in point: Vann's imagined conversations with two detectives (Dwight Yoakam and Dennis Haysbert) and fantasies about his eventual capture.
The film opens with a cliffhanger, then flashes back four months, fills in the details, and builds to the opening sequence, which is then replayed with the benefit of perspective.

 'The Best Man' (R)
Such is the premise of writer-director Malcolm Lee's "The Best Man," the latest entrant in the beautiful buppie school of filmmaking, (preceded by "Love Jones," "Hav Plenty" and "How to Be a Player"), where the men are all buff and the women are all fine.
Nia Long plays Jordan, the "best girlfriend Harper never had." She's a producer at BET (miraculously relocated from Washington to Manhattan), and in the hands of Lee (who's Spike Lee's cousin), she's yet another depiction of an ambitious career woman who can't get a man, never mind that she's sexy, beautiful and smart.
But ultimately when it's all said and done, "Best Man" remains always a groomsman, never a groom: It backs down on its promise to both challenge and entertain, opting instead for the easy laugh – and the pat ending.

 WAG: Werner Herzog's Grizzly Man
After all, it’s a lot cheaper to shoot a documentary than it is to make a feature film, with all its sets and costumes to be made and its large cast and crew to be paid.
Whatever drove audiences to see Grizzly Man, though, the fact that we know before the film starts that Treadwell was killed by a grizzly makes the film electric: his opening monologue becomes Shakespearean in its tragic, unwitting heft and foreshadowing.
In the Grizzly Man DVD’s short documentary about its soundtrack, Herzog tells a musician that all his films have been “after a deeper truth, an ecstatic truth.” Incident at Loch Ness, directed by Zack Penn, is about a decidedly different kind of truth.
