James Taylor: It's a very flattering and validating thing to have your music considered enough of a part of popular culture to justify building an evening like this around it.
Taylor: We did a day of rehearsal beforehand, and I think it's rare for the person being honored to be involved in that.
Taylor: In fact, people were talking about my doing one for years, and I thought at one point it was all the record company wanted from me. I don't know if it was stubbornness on my part or a reluctance to jump into that sort of bag, but I had always resisted the request.

The Best Of James Taylor - James Taylor - Pandora Internet Radio
Over 20 tracks, Warner has succeeded -- with full cooperation from Taylor, who wrote the liner notes -- in giving an accurate representation of the songwriter, who has survived and even flourished for over 35 years in the music biz.
The producers also chose for inclusion here the 1976 version of "Carolina on My Mind" and the live take of "Steamroller" from the first Taylor Warner hits compilation in 1976 -- it's now the only way to get these tracks.
There is also a new recording here, "Bittersweet," finished just before release with Taylor's new band, that is a nice icing on the cake, but, to be a critic about the whole thing, this writer would have preferred they include "Anywhere Like Heaven" from Sweet Baby James instead -- another miniscule complaint.

James Taylor was the archetype for the gentle, inward-looking singer/songwriter movement of the early '70s.
The easy lilt and timbre of Taylor's voice belies the complex emotional content of his songs, which aren't merely carefree folk-based odes, but instead look unflinchingly at a flawed man's journey through life.
It's a tribute to his knack for making great pop records that he managed a long, decade-plus string of big hits.
