The Beverly Hillbillies (1993) - A Review by David Nusair
It's fitting that The Beverly Hillbillies is based on a popular sitcom, given that the film feels perfectly suited to the small screen.
The movie's set-up is identical to that of the series, with Jed Clampett (played by Jim Varney) hitting it big after discovering an extensive reservoir of oil underneath his property.
The Beverly Hillbillies doesn't require the viewer to have seen the original show, though it is possible fans may derive more enjoyment out of the film than neophytes (simply because they can marvel at how accurate the whole thing is, while overlooking the general lack of creativity on display).

Schneider is just as lacking in charisma here as he is in his own movies, and Thompson convinces more as a French governess than she does as the vampish shrew impersonating one to seduce Jeb out of his fortune.
Truth be told, the film is thrown together and cheap, scripted by the usual five writers (which is somehow not as funny as one writer on his or her own) and going through its motions so lackadaisically that analysis would only serve to honour its cause.
Not that Spheeris has much to work with in The Beverly Hillbillies, but really, little is more than the nothing she brings to the project.

The Beverly Hillbillies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Beverly Hillbillies was an American television about a hillbilly family living in Southern California widely considered the most successful sitcom of the 1960's.
A running joke on the series was back in the hills, the movie theaters were still showing films from the silent movie era and the Hillbillies were unaware of talking pictures or more contemporary movie stars.
The Hillbillies went back to the hills for Christmas during the first season but did not return until season eight when several episodes were filmed on location at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri.

Considering its name, you might assume that Beverly Hills High School was the school used as the location for "West Beverly High" in the hit Fox TV show "Beverly Hills, 90210." Guess again.
And ironically, since Beverly Hills High is situated in the city's southern section, the school's actual zip code isn't even 90210 - it's 90212.
Beverly Hills High school is located just two blocks east of the Century City Shopping Center, on Moreno Drive, (between Santa Monica Blvd. and Olympic Blvd).

There is an inspired moment in the big-screen adaptation of "The Beverly Hillbillies," a surprise that comes when a Los Angeles detective is hired late in the film.
But that joke will be lost on the young audience members who seem to be the target for this picture, a movie so dumb and vulgar that it makes the old '60s TV series seem sophisticated.
He moves his family to Beverly Hills for the sake of his tomboy daughter Elly May (Erika Eleniak), who needs "refinin'." And he's on the lookout for a wife to help out.

Granny, my favorite character from the series, is recreated here by Cloris Leachman, and she does a great job -- but as the script gives her virtually nothing to do (and less that's funny), it's all for nought.
When the movie ended, I asked myself if the people making it thought their script would make for a sure-fire hit, and if so, I wondered what they thought people might find to enjoy.
I can't imagine that the idea for this movie, as presented to the studio executives, was any more involved than, "We do plot number two on a movie version of 'The Beverly Hillbillies'.

 The Beverly Hillbillies
The Beverly Hillbillies (1962-71, CBS) was the brainchild of Paul Henning, the cracker-barrel surrealist also responsible for Petticoat Junction, The Real McCoys, and, notably, Green Acres.
Despite the silliness of much of its humor, The Beverly Hillbillies managed to bolster its credibility among its core audience with a kind of hillbilly authenticism.
A Made-for-Television movie appeared on CBS in 1981, without Baer, and the series was later remade as a feature film in 1993 by the makers of Wayne's World, but neither did justice to the original.

It was such a refreshing joy to finally see a movie the whole family could enjoy that was not overrun with language and sex.
Although there a few hand gestures in the movie, the way they are presented did not offend me. Growing up watching the series on tv, I was amazed just how much the producers and writers stuck to the story line.

The storyline has been updated to make it a bit more topical, and the characters as depicted in the movie are slightly more contemporary than their counterparts in the TV series.
This, along with "The Honeymooners" "The Dukes of Hazzard" and countless other movies that are based on TV shows, should be held up as prime examples as to why certain shows should never get the big-screen treatment.
It is one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my entire life; it's trash, pure and simple.

The Beverly Hillbillies wisely emphasizes the Clampett clan's enduring popular strength -- that of the uncouth bumpkins amongst the two-faced swells -- rather than playing to its crudest common denominator of dumb hick humor and moonshine stereotypes.
It's just that there were a lot of different paths this movie spin-off could have taken and the low road is not one of them.
