Topic: The Bickersons

In the News (Mon 28 Dec 09)

The Bickersons - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bickersons was created by Philip Rapp, the one-time Eddie Cantor writer who had also created the Fanny Brice skits (for Ziegfeld Follies of the Air and Maxwell House Coffee Time) that grew into radio's Baby Snooks.
Bickerson wide awake and anxious, as poor husband John, victim of contagious insomnia, or Schmoe's Disease, broadcasts the telltale signs of the dreaded affliction.
When The Bickersons was re-developed for a short run on series television (CBS), Lew Parker (later familiar as That Girl's harried, slightly overbearing father) took the role of John Bickerson---but it didn't work as well as the original.

By the time Don Ameche and Frances Langford recorded these two classic comedy albums for Columbia in 1962, they had already been stars for close to two decades, starting with their own radio show which began airing on NBC in 1946 through their many appearances on television during the ‘50s.
All the things that made them America’s favorite fighting couple are here—his snoring, her spendthrift ways, his drinking, her family.
Includes "Breakfast with John and Blanche," "Later That Same Evening," "Bickersons At Sea," and "Wedding Anniversary" on the first record and "Rounds 1-4" on the rematch.

This show has timeless comedic appeal, like "The Honeymooners." Indeed, Jackie Gleason was inspired by "The Bickersons" in creating "The Honeymooners." The comparison is close enough that Phil Rapp-- genius comedy writer of Baby Snooks, Topper (TV), I Married Joan (TV) and The Bickersons-- sued Gleason in court over intellectual theft.
Bickersons is certainly one of the funniest, wittiest, best acted, best written husband/wife comedies ever broadcast.
Bickersons began as a featured bit on the Charlie McCarthy show, then a sketch The Old Gold Show and The Dreme Time Show.

Biography for Don Ameche   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
His teaming with Frances Langford as "The Bickersons" is regarded as classic comedy on radio.
Ameche was as active on network radio as he was on-screen, but as his film career waned, he found newfound success on the airwaves with Frances Langford as The Bickersons, whose hilarious battles continued on record albums and commercials for decades to come.
From the 1950s through the 1970s, he worked only sporadically, most notably as the emcee on the TV circus program "International Showtime." Then he was plucked out of semiretirement to play one of the wealthy, miserly brothers in Trading Places (1983), with Ralph Bellamy as his selfish sibling), and suddenly he was "hot" again.

So it only makes sense that the term “Bickersons” is often applied to a constantly quarreling married twosome—not too shabby, when you consider the fact that the famous husband-and-wife pair is still remembered fondly by fans today even though they had a relatively short run during the Golden Age of Radio.
The "Bickersons" sketches always adhered to a simple formula: John, who suffers from a crippling case of “insomnia,” keeps Blanche awake with his snoring—so Blanche returns the favor by keeping him with her incessant nagging and chattering.
The "Bickersons" appeared briefly on television as a sketch on a 1950 series called Star Time, but it wasn't until Ameche and Langford re-teamed in 1962 for a pair of successful million-selling comedy albums (The Bickersons and The Bickersons Fight Back) released by Columbia that it was proved the classic couple had staying power.

This is the second long-player to feature one of the most treasured classic radio programs to have made the transition onto television.
The Bickersons Fight Back (1963) follows the antics of Philip Rapp's timeless and tetchy John & Blanche Bickerson, whose martial mayhem became legendary nearly two decades prior to this recording.
Each of the four tracks are dubbed "rounds," appropriately enough since the Bickersons go head to head about a variety of contentious topics, such as Blanche's breakfast fare, which includes a two-foot rhubarb pie, powered eggs, and frog legs.

Ernst Lubitsch's warm and witty period piece, HEAVEN CAN WAIT (1943), meanwhile, offered Ameche the role of a lifetime as a likable rogue relating his past peccadillos to the Devil at the entrance to Hell.
Ameche's stardom faded late in the 40s after he and Fox parted company, but he kept extremely busy in variety programs on TV through the 1950s, often teaming with singer Frances Langford, his co-star on radio's "The Bickersons" two decades earlier.
Beginning in 1961 Ameche's bravado and panache served him well in his best-remembered TV role, that of ringmaster of "International Showtime" (1961-65), traveling worldwide to present different circuses and magic acts each week.
