Radio's War of the Worlds Broadcast (1938)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
This step was taken by the FCC chairman in connection with last Sunday night's broadcast, "The War of the Worlds." The word "flash" was used in the broadcast to dramatize the H. Wells' imaginative story of an attack on this planet by "monsters from Mars." Many protests were received by the commission against the broadcast.
Without question, listeners were frightened by the War of the Worlds broadcast; Mattoon residents were convinced their dizziness and nausea were caused by the phantom's gas; workers were hospitalized for days with rashes, rapid heart beat, and nausea during the June bug epidemic; and farmers were convinced their cattle had died in a mysterious manner.
While Moorehead had appeared in several of the original Mercury summer broadcasts, when the show switched to Sundays in the fall she was unable to continue as a cast member due to her regular Sunday night comedy gig on the Phil Baker show.

College Swing / The Big Broadcast of 1938
In the two films presented here -- "The Big Broadcast of 1938" and "College Swing" -- Hope is merely another brand of fresh-face, smart-ass light comic from the Broadway stage that populated thirties comedies like Stepford Comics.
As far as the films themselves are concerned, they are mish-mashes, with absurd and flimsy plots that serve as a framework for comedy and musical numbers.
In "The Big Broadcast of 1938," Hope's name crops up sixth in the credits as he mingles with a collection of Paramount's radio, film, and recording stars (Dorothy Lamour, Martha Raye, Shirley Ross, Ben Blue, and W.C. Fields -- Fields gets top billing and it's mostly Fields's film).

Martha Raye - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
She became known as "The Big Mouth"; apparently she was often made up in a way which tended to cause it to appear as even larger than it actually already was.
For example, she appears in the picture The Big Broadcast of 1938 where Bob Hope first sings what became his theme song, Thanks for the Memories; however, it is not sung to Miss Raye, but rather the female leading actress that she supports.
She joined the USO soon after the US entered World War II.

I don't have too much to add to what Mark has already written, except that Bob Hope's duet with Shirley Ross on "Thanks for the Memories" in The Big Broadcast of 1938 is a far greater contribution to Western Civilization than the entirety of Hitchens' punditry.
The way Hope and Ross move from nostalgia to cynicism to bittersweet regret is nothing short of magical, and is quite possibly the best duet of any musical.
Hitchens defense of Orwell comes down to the fact that Orwell came down on the right side of the three big issues of the 20th century...Facism, Imperialism, Totalitariansim...A genius!)So, I though Hitch should just take a break, collect his thoughts, and go back to writing the fine essays of the past.
