The Big Chill is a 1983 film which tells the story of several University of Michigan college friends who gather together again for the funeral of one of their number, after not having seen one another for years.
It was inspired by the John Sayles 1980 film Return of the Secaucus 7.
The movie was filmed in historic Beaufort, South Carolina, and was shot at the same antebellum home used as a location for The Great Santini, starring Robert Duvall and Blythe Danner.

Only problem was that his role was cut out entirely from the film, so he only briefly appears as unrecognizable parts of the deceased's body.
Obviously for a film of this age we would expect film artefacts, and unfortunately these are present throughout the film.
Presented full frame (with film excerpts at 1.78:1 ratio) with Dolby Digital 2.0 sound, this is a very nice encapsulation of the gestation of the film, the way the film was produced, the antics of the cast off set and why the Kevin Costner ending was deleted.

''The Big Chill,'' a film directed by Lawrence Kasdan, about the reunion of a group of friends from the 1960's, will open the 21st New York Film Festival Sept. 23 at Lincoln Center.
The film will be screened at 7:30 P.M. in Alice Tully Hall and at 9 P.M. in Avery Fisher Hall.
Other films in the festival are yet to be announced.

The Big Chill is a film that mourns the hippie era and it is also the beginnings and the rise of the yuppie era.
The film tells the story of a group of college friends from the late sixties who are reunited at the funeral of a best friend named Alex (the role of the stiff was Kevin Costner until his scenes were taken out of the film) who committed suicide.
I had to look The Big Chill up on the internet to be reminded of the general story line, but the music has stayed with me all these years, and will remain with me, from the first notes of Joy to the World through the rest of the soundtrack and back.

Watching this film as a now 30-something makes me convinced: how the mighty have fallen when their youth was blessed with too much of a good time too soon.
The Big Chill seems to have pulled in an inordinate number of reviews not only negative but often angry, and for a curious set of reasons: "the sets are cheap, the acting is dated and the conversation shallow." I don't agree.
The sadness in "The Big Chill" was the number of characters whose focus on the past seemed to have blurred their present.

While the film isn't without its charms, it essentially comes down to nearly two hours of "deep talk" from a group of smug Boomers about their "ideals" and how they've changed since college.
This film possesses a famed soundtrack, but the music doesn't get much of a treatment here; again, it comes off as glorified mono with absolutely no use of the rear channels.
Even if you discount my dislike of the film itself, this DVD fails on the most basic count: it simply doesn't look very good, and the sound mix also is quite limited.

In any event, I wrote him back that the 1960s were big in the movies right now because the people who make the movies were students in the 1960s, and that the teenagers of 2001 would no doubt be sick and tired of his generation's memories of the olden days of 1983.
And then I thought about "The Big Chill," a new movie in which survivors of the 1960s ask themselves how they could possibly be in their 30s.
This is the second movie on almost exactly the same theme -- a weekend reunion among college friends from the '60s, during which they relive the past, fear the present and regret the interim.
