Big Bang Theory - MSN Encarta
The overall framework of the big bang theory came out of solutions to Einstein’s general relativity field equations and remains unchanged, but various details of the theory are still being modified today.
The uniformity of the helium abundance around the universe supports the big bang theory and the abundance of deuterium can be used to estimate the density of matter in the universe.
If the inflationary version of big bang theory is correct, then the amount of dark matter and of whatever else might exist is just enough to bring the universe to the boundary between open and closed.

The epoch during the radiation era when the universe switched from being radiation-dominated to being matter-dominated.
Big Bang era in which the infant universe went through a brief period of extremely rapid (exponential) expansion, after which it settled back into the more leisurely rate of expansion of the standard model.
The Big Bang era, prior to which Einstein's theory of gravitation breaks down and a quantized theory of gravity is needed.

Big Bone Lick, Educational Resources for K-16
Big Bone Lick located in Boone County, northern Kentucky, is one of the most famous paleontological sites in North America.
A French scientist, Louis-Jean-Marie Daubenton (1716-1800) demonstrated that the thigh bone of a fossil elephant from Big Bone Lick was essentially the same as the thigh bone of fossil elephant bones from Siberia, and both were the similar to the thigh bone of a modern elephant.
The bones from the lick are fossils of mammals that lived during the Pleistocene Epoch, often called the Ice Ages, and are much younger than the dinosaurs.

Big bang crossover effect (3 facts) - The epoch during the radiation era when the universe switched from being radiation-dominated to being matter-dominated.
This led to a decrease in the optical depth of the Universe, and the photons of radiation (which we now observe as the cosmic microwave background) became able to travel large distances without interacting with matter., The release of photons from constant collisions with massive particles as the universe expanded and its matter density diminished.
Planck era (6 facts) - The Big Bang era, prior to which Einstein's theory of gravitation breaks down and a quantized theory of gravity is needed.

 Big Bend Through Time
In Big Bend, the sediments deposited during the Cambrian were primarily sandstones, limestones, and dolomites.
Big Bend is still covered in shallow seas, but the character of sedimentation changes slightly to include shales (in addition to chert, limestone, and sandstone deposition).
Big Bend's geologic history is quite unique, a mixture of placid ocean deposition, murky swamps with large reptiles, and violent earth-shaking volcanic eruptions.

Epoch homes are built to withstand category 4 hurricanes, have a 7-inch, rather than the standard 41/2-inch center wall, and arrive as finished as the homeowner wants: with installed windows, complete kitchens and baths, hardwood floors, and roughed-out wiring and plumbing.
Epoch is one of the few in the industry that are ISO 9000 certified, which means to company and its personnel adhere to a strict quality control program that seeks to always improve through documentation.

 Big Bang Cosmology Primer
Big Bang cosmology of course predicts that the Universe is and has been expanding from its inception.
Big bang nucleosynthesis is the process whereby the lightest chemical elements (hydrogen, helium, and lithium) were produced in the extreme temperatures that prevailed the first second after the big bang.
Big Bang cosmology assumes but does not explain why the Universe started out in such a synchronized fashion, with a near perfect uniformity but just enough roughness to produce galaxies and other cosmic structures.

 Before the Big Bang
In the standard model of the big bang, there is not enough time for the regions to have learned about each other and equalised their density and temperature in the ultra-short interval between the Universe's birth and the Planck time.
In the standard model of the big bang, the Universe started out in an extraordinarily special state in which the temperature and density are fine-tuned to be precisely the same in 1093 separate regions.
Effects from before the big bang should also be visible in the cosmic microwave background, the "afterglow" of the big bang.

Did the Big Bang kickstart the Universe?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
'Big Bang' is believed to be an offshoot of the backward extrapolation of Einstein's general theory of relativity, in which one of the basic assumptions is the constancy of the speed of light which is 300,000 km/sec in vacuum.
Einstein's general relativity is based on the assumption of speed of light remaining the same in all epochs of time whether it is the primordial Universe or it is the Universe that we observe in its current form.
Astronomers working on the WMAP mission stunned the scientific community with their announcement that the first generation stars in the Universe were surprisingly born just after 200 million years of the big bang birth of the cosmos.

Big Ear Radio Observatory - Wow! 20th Anniversary Report
In 1973 the Big Ear radio telescope was converted from measuring the location and strength of wideband radio sources (the Ohio Sky Survey) to a similar study of narrowband radio sources.
The Big Ear was well designed for a systematic sky survey, as was clearly demonstrated by the success of the Ohio Sky Survey (in which about 20,000 radio sources were measured, about half of which had never been observed before).

The Big Bang was the moment of maximal (yet finite) density, temperature and curvature.
Throughout the standard post-Big Bang epoch, these fluctuations generate irregularities in the universe, thus giving rise to a wealth of physical phenomena that today open a window on the pre-Big Bang universe.

The Big Bang is not a Myth   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The value and legitimacy of the Big Bang hypothesis is properly tried by the self-correcting processes of the scientific community every time new data comes to light (83), and that is the way it should be.
If the collapsing region is big enough to match the observations, then the pressure must be so large that a fl hole forms and the region does not re-expand.
The Big Bang hypothesis is a story about origins that is unsupported by the evidence and that is believed in spite of that evidence, that is protected by scientists who have a personal interest in its continued dominance and who set out to destroy the reputations of those who put forward viable alternatives.

Scientists Find That Theory of Big Bang is Constantly Shifting
The equations of the Big Bang could even be used to predict the relative amounts of the lighter elements, hydrogen, helium and lithium, created early in cosmic history.
Indirectly measuring the distance of the galaxies and the speed at which they appeared to be flying away, the great astronomer Edwin Hubble concluded that 2 billion years had passed since everything was clumped together waiting to explode.
But then cosmologists began to worry that the radiation was too smooth, indicating a featureless, homogeneous early universe that inexplicably gave way to the irregular cosmos, studded with stars and galaxies and great galactic clusters, that is seen today.

Johann Rafelski, Homepage, Professor of Physics, University of Arizona
By recreating the conditions that existed about 10--30 microseconds after the Big Bang, experiments may now have created a new vacuum state, in which matter is nearly mass-less, and quarks are free.
In the Big-Bang epoch it was the high temperature that revealed this simple deconfined structure of matter known as the quark--gluon plasma (QGP).
The reality has proven that strongly interacting matter behaves as called: a large nucleus turns out to be a very hard, non-transparent target to impinging lighter projectile, and experiences the required acceleration of a few times 10^{31}g as it slows down.

Big Principles, like the fleas in the poem, need Principles Bigger Still to support them, and the combined structures will be vulnerable.
The strange thing is this: At the same time that one part of contemporary science has come forward to provide new answers to the Big Questions, or to bolster older answers, other observers (and the two groups may overlap) believe the “secular, humanistic faith” provided by science to be decaying.
