The Big Hit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Big Hit is a dry comedy-action movie from 1998 which served as an acting vehicle for Mark Wahlberg and also starred Lou Diamond Phillips, with appearances by Christina Applegate, Avery Brooks, and Elliot Gould.
Enlisted by the group to hold Keiko, Smiley has to hide the bound and gagged schoolgirl on his property, away from his girlfriend Pam and her family coming for dinner.
Eventually Melvin feels sorry for the girl, and lets her out for a bit, and they hit off a rapport, preparing dinner together and leading into a love scene reminiscient of the pottery scene from Ghost which is cut short by the girl's attempted escape.

There's sure to be something in The Big Hit to offend just about everyone, but the film is audacious enough that I found myself gaining sporadic entertainment from its cheerful, cartoonish spoofing.

 DVD Review: The Big Hit
Although "Hit" is not nearly as smart or funny as "Grosse Pointe", the two films differ highly.
"The Big Hit" works because, even though most of it is silly, the actors give their best towards the picture.
The action scenes are well planned out and shot(especially the first "hit") and some of the dialogue and scenes brought out a few chuckles.

The Big Hit is yet another movie that seems to have all the elements of a really strong film but somehow doesn't manage to capitalize upon them.
In The Big Hit, not only do most of the characters act like bad people, they are bad people; they're fellow hit men and other forms of criminals.
The Big Hit appears in an aspect ratio of approximately 1.85:1 and in a fullscreen version on this double-sided, single-layered DVD; the widescreen image has been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.

CNN - Review: 'The Big Hit' is a big miss - April 24, 1998
But it's Lou Diamond Phillips, playing psycho hit man Cisco, whose acting is so embarrassing he should change at least one of his three names and retire to dinner theater in Iowa.
Thirty people are killed in the first 10 minutes, making this ludicrous group of hit men look like combat commandos as they try to take out an entire high-rise office building where a white slavery group is doing business.
"The Big Hit" runs 93 minutes and is rated R for violence, pervasive language and some sexuality.

Wahlberg's Big Hit is a hit
In the surprisingly entertaining and extremely impressive action/comedy The Big Hit, Mark Wahlberg proves that he's more than the sum of his parts (and for those of you who saw Boogie Nights, you know exactly what I am talking about).
Yep, Smiley is a hit man, and in the brilliantly choreographed opening killing sequence, we see that he's a damn good one at that.
In The Big Hit, Phillips's main method of acting is overacting and widening his eyes in a psychotic gaze.

 The Big Hit
Because this is a comedy about hit men there is an immediate comparison to Grosse Pointe Blank with John Cusack, both are hit men and they each have a conscience.
This action comedy makes little sense, the four young hit men Mel (Wahlberg), Cisco (Lou Diamond Phillips), Crunch (Bokeem Woodbine) and Vince (Antonio Sabato) are very efficient at work, because Mel is willing to do all the dirty work and put himself on the line while the others play it safe in the background.
The Big Hit may not be a worthy film but it is one that brings raucous silly comedy to the screen.

The Big Hit captures every essence of what makes bad Hong Kong movies bad: bland, stereotypical characters, "comedic" bits that aren't funny, and a boring, frustrating subplot that adds nothing to the movie, and only serves to detract from it.

The Big Hit exhibits many of the same characteristics as the most over-the-top entries into the Hong Kong action/comedy genre, which shouldn't come as a surprise considering that the director (Che-Kirk Wong) and executive producer (John Woo) made their reputations overseas on those kinds of films.
The Big Hit is as irreverent as parodies come, and exhibits a great deal more energy than the tired, pun-filled Naked Gun clones.
The Big Hit's lead character is the improbably named Melvin Smiley (Mark Wahlberg, last seen wearing a prosthesis in Boogie Nights).

Wahlberg plays Mel, one of a group of four hit men -- Cisco (Lou Diamond Phillips), Crunch (Bokeem Woodbine) and Vince (Antonio Sabato Jr.) are the other three -- who work for big bad guy Paris (the steely Avery Brooks).
Which is in itself something of a formula these days, but The Big Hit gets so silly -- Phillips' Cheech-Marin-meets-Scarface bad guy helps immensely -- that it's impossible to hate.
The best modern angst-ridden hit-man comedy is still Grosse Pointe Blank, but The Big Hit packs a Daffy Duck punch that may well connect.

 The Big Hit
Troubled hitman Melvin Smiley (Wahlberg) is in a money crunch from having to juggle both a fiancee and a mistress, so when his best buddy Cisco (Phillips) gives him the opportunity to get in on an "unauthorised kidnapping," Smiley joins up -- not knowing that the intended target is the goddaughter of their boss.
The Big Hit kind of redeems itself near the end with a good shootout/chase sequence, but even this is marred by plot holes that, even when "explained" via flashback, seem more ridiculous than ever.
As stated before, the action sequences (what little there are) are staged well and some of the jokes (such as the nerdy video clerk who keeps hounding Norman) are pretty funny.
