The Big Kahuna Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Revolving around three characters in a hotel room, this modest yet engaging film tackles the big issues — life, death, religion — with enough humor and insight to overcome its familiar setup.
Filmed theatrical adaptations live or die by their actors' performances, and all three of Kahuna's stars rise to the challenge.
As a result, Kahuna feels like a filmed play, but Swanbeck's intimate approach also keeps the viewer close to the characters.Though The Big Kahuna is ultimately too small-scale to be more than a showcase for some good performances, it remains a minor triumph.

SCREEN IT! ARTISTIC REVIEW: THE BIG KAHUNA
Larry, on the other hand, is eager to make his pitch to their biggest potential client, dubbed "The Big Kahuna," but is otherwise a sardonic man with no qualms about speaking his mind or belittling others with his acerbic wit and comments.
When their efforts of landing the Big Kahuna seemingly fail, the tensions rise and the differences between the men soon leads to some unpredictable revelations and behavior.
Films, on the other hand, can go anywhere and show most anything, but often given off a much different feel than their proscenium-based relatives.

The Big Kahuna may be one of those plays, but it doesn't have enough power in the first place to make a strong claim on our attentions.
Spacey is the main reason to watch; as is always the case, even in his less compelling films, he manages to impress through sheer force of talent.

Based on the play Hospitality Suite, The Big Kahuna takes place almost entirely in the one room of the hospitality suite the men rented to hold their company's reception.
Kahuna's real contribution to the realm of sales-themed literature is the view it offers into the heart of men who have spent varying parts of their life in the corporate world.
The Big Kahuna shows the inner life of the company man and suggests that there might just be a soul in the minions of marketing after all.

 DVD Review: The Big Kahuna
"The Big Kahuna" certainly offered a number of fine actors, but it was passed over by audiences early this year - a sort of junior "Glengarry Glen Ross", the film is essentially a smaller play adapted for the screen.
It's mainly a dialogue-driven film, and the only place it slightly expands upon that is in Christopher Young("Rounders", "Hurricane")'s score, which is offered very lightly from the surrounds a handful of times.
The "play"-like nature of the film is mainly dialogue though; although the audio is basic, there really aren't any opportunities missed.

Bob is the only one who comes into contact with "The Big Kahuna," but whether or not he makes the sale is barely even secondary to what this film has to say.

Definitely one of those films that will be talked about a year from now as one of those great movies that nobody saw.

JoBlo reviews the movie "The Big Kahuna"
The film on the whole is actually kind of uneven, with the first thirty minutes or so concentrating more on the hip one-liners and straight-talking sales bullshit, while the second half seriously switches into a high existential mode.
Plot is actually secondary in this film, with the "big kahuna" dopplegangering as the big client for whom the boys await, and the mid-life crisis which DeVito's character is seemingly going through.
All in all, this film is to be suggested to those who enjoy the plotless, deep character studies rife with conversations on top of conversations, on top of a few more conversations.

Where "Glengarry" examined the motivation behind the men who are defined by their jobs, "Kahuna" goes one step further to consider why they took these jobs in the first place.
The fact that the film has the look and feel of a stage presentation makes perfect sense, since it was adapted from the appropriately-named stage play "Hospitality Suite".

If you showed The Big Kahuna to 100 intelligent people, I'm sure that 95 of them would guess that it was originally a play.
The twist of the story is that Bob is the one who unwittingly meets the Kahuna and then lets him get away, more concerned with sharing about Jesus than his company.

It's the night of their big reception, and along with ushering the fresh-faced Bob (Pete Facinelli) into their less-than-glamorous life of salesmanship, the biggest client of their careers is about to pass through their door.
Larry and Phil have been selling for years, and in their highly competitive career of urgency, non-stop travel, and seemingly never-ending nights, it is understandable that their fear of failure is personified by new kid on the block Bob.
The Big Kahuna is a wonderfully crafted and intense film by first-time helmer, John Swanbeck, whose own work as a theatre director has provided a natural transit into creating intriguing and mature films.

Movie Review - The Big Kahuna - www.ericdsnider.com - The Official Website of Eric D. Snider
The influence of Samuel Beckett's absurdist play "Waiting for Godot" is still being felt, lately in "The Big Kahuna," a film based on the play "Hospitality Suite," written (and adapted for the screen) by Roger Rueff.
Their "Godot" is Dick Fuller, a man who is the "big kahuna" of business-types who, if he buys Lodestar's industrial lubricants, will make everybody very wealthy and very happy.
The film's only major misstep is in the final moments, as that faux-inspirational "graduation address" song from last year (the one with all the wise advice like "Don't read fashion magazines; they will only make you feel ugly") plays on the soundtrack.

Bob returns from his meeting with "the Big Kahuna" only to report that he has spent the last few hours discussing Jesus with the man. Not once did he mention lubricants with the president, or hand over the business cards to Mr.

Bob could be selling Jesus or lubricants, but he is not deceiving anyone into thinking his conversation is not still trying to make a pitch.

The film takes place entirely in the one hotel room, betraying its stage origins (play and screenplay are both by Roger Rueff).
Here the film gets to the very essence of Judeo-Christianity, the recognition that humanity is defined by its imperfection, by sinfulness, by the capacity to do wrong, even to do evil.
It's a superior and thoughtful film and, though some may justifiably find it too slow or uneventful, it is worth seeing just for DeVito's fine performance and for the nicely nuanced treatment of religious themes and of the human condition.
