Rykodisc Catalog - Third / Sister Lovers - Big Star   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Until THIRD, Big Star's sound was a hybrid of Anglo-pop and rough-edged '60s soul, the antithesis of the "progressive rock" trend of the period.
It is an album of poetic depression, deservedly lauded for its honesty and brutal emotion.
The rerelease of THIRD finally reconciles all of the album's material and sequences it with the use of the producer's notes from the sessions.

 The Big O | Anime.com Anime Shrines
The Big O has been often described as 'What if you combined Batman and Giant Robo?' But it is way more than that.
Combined with one of the most intense, dramatic and downright gothic soundtracks ever recorded, (and one of the most hysterical opening theme songs ever), The Big O is both parody, homage, and something unique all it's own.
Gothic, jazzy, fun and somber, it's the music that really makes Big O the show that it is (that is, apart from a killer storyline, amazing art direction, and of course, everyone's favorite sardonic android...) Big O rulez.

CD Baby: REEL BIG FISH: Our Live Album is Better Than Your Live Album
The second important milestone in Reel Big Fish's career came nearly a decade later, in early 2006, when the act learned that they were finally dropped from the label's roster (which had now morphed into Jive Records) after years of begging to be cut loose.
This is the perfect album for anyone who lost touch with the band over the last couple of albums and is interested in reconnecting.
The album really captures the frenetic energy that is RBF's live show, and the production, for the most part, sounds fantastic as well- certainly better than the muddy mess that was the production on their last LP.

Laurie did a huge concert called United States I-IV, and Big Science is a studio version of many of the songs.
I put in Big Science, and everyone shut up and listened and didn't stop until it was over.
The music was made to go with the concert, which was a performance art piece with film, photographs, special effects, spoken text, lights, hand gestures, etc. Laurie once said that when she listens to Big Science she thinks "where are the pictures?" :-) I never felt the album was missing anything.

"Sign O' the Times" - Salon
Most double albums -- at least the great ones -- are bound by nothing except their own far-reaching scopes.
His first double album, "1999," was a smashing success, a cultural landmark that showed how genius could turn vulgarity into erotica, weirdness into eccentricity, and synthesizers into orchestral weapons.
Many Prince-o-philes recognize "Sign O' the Times" as the beginning of the end for popular acceptance of his music, but to say that is to see the glass half-empty.

Amazon.com: Big Science: Music: Laurie Anderson   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Big Science prompted trendy early-'80s art students to plug in their synthesizers and start their own postpunk performance-art-cum-rock-&-roll projects.
The album actually produced a hit single in the form of "O Superman." That track and "Let X=X" are the two best-known things from this album, which is a condensation of United States, Anderson's four-and-a-half-hour performance-art piece.
Just like she asks in a song from another album, "if this is the work of an angry god/I want to look into his angry face," we are all still looking for answers.

Amazon.com: Big O: Sound Score II for Second Season: Music: Toshihiko Sahashi   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
The first track is an excellent remix of the fight music from the first Big O. The second is the tune that plays while Rodger gives his "City of amnesia..." speech (but with saxaphone instead of piano).
Most of the other music is either "bad guy" music (like Beck's Theme), or remixes of the mysterious themes from the first Big O. While it isn't quite as inspired as the music from the first Big O soundtrack, it's still pretty good.
You may have mixed feelings about Legend of First Memory since it happens to be a remix involving several themes from Big O mixed together, but it seems to be a track where you either like it or you don't.

Though by no means as ³broken² as the sounds of the Z, Big Block Dodge¹s songs do incorporate some unconventional time signatures and passages, but they are never too dissonant and often return to groove-laden territory.
Not unlike Project Z (Jimmy Herring’s band that is thanked in the liner notes), the jams are long and varied, and very fluid.
Choice tracks include the slow, surrealistic “Kilimanjaro,” and the progressive “SOL.” And hey, the album cover is cool as everything, featuring a very 60’s looking girl and car.

The eroticism and sexuality present in the Lovage album is more implied than explicit.
Yeah, I know there is a "stiff one" here and a "suck me" there, but by and large the album relies on innuendo rather than graphic detail.

While researching about lost albums, this entry in David Downing’s 1994 book, A Dreamer Of Pictures: Neil Young, The Man And His Music, revealed that Reprise, Young’s record company, had released a press statement in January of 1971 of an imminent live album.
This was the tour when Neil Young was promoting After The Goldrush, an album that fired the imagination of young Americans.
It may have been recorded to be part of a compilation live Neil Young album but at the time, the record company probably thought it best to step aside for Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s double live album, Four Way Street, which appeared in stores in early 1971.

The Big O - Ophelias - Music Reviews
The final effort from the '80s psych types in the Ophelias probably ranks as their best in the end -- it's not quite the truly fried experimentation that many groups would attempt in later years, but as a just-wiggier-enough equivalent to Game Theory, The Big O makes for good fun.
That said, the spirit of the Ophelias suggests Marc Bolan more than Brian Wilson, with lead singer Leslie Medford's vocals having that kind of winsomely sweet singing set against electric grooves that suggests the T. Rex elf's late-'60s existence, though with less warble and more choirboy control ("When Winter Comes" being a notable exception).
Elsewhere, there's U.S. garage vocal sass and sneer ("Leah Hirsig" in the verses, "She" throughout most of the song), "Strawberry Fields Forever"/"Penny Lane" orchestrations on "Pretty Green Ice-Box Eyes," bits of funk slap bass, as well as the general clarity of most '60s-referencing albums from two decades later.

The only bizarre moment comes, ironically enough, with the single from these sessions, "Penny Arcade," which sounds more like the kind of song you'd hear at a beer hall than a rock & roll single.
