Topic: The Big Sleep (1978 film)

 A Film Critics Guide Book
Films of the 40's and 50's relied more on talent and script, while films of the 80's and 90's rely more on big budgets, action and special effects.
Films which are made to show natural or mechanical disasters, with large death-tolls, that have befallen mankind.
The film has a certain bit of maturity, especially during some scenes with Mayo and Kaye, and it some times catches you off guard because of the year the film was released.

 The Big Sleep (1946)
The film has a curious story, being shot in 1944 and not released until two years later with 18 minutes of footage reshot or altogether deleted.
In The Big Sleep, Marlowe is hired by General Sternwood (Charles Waldron) to stop the flmailing occasioned by the bawdy behavior of his daughter Carmen (Martha Vickers).
The crime story itself is not very inspiring, but the film is quite entertaining even if the "risque" scenes are not even PG by today's standards.

Since that day the film has been scientifically analysed by several experts, including those residing in Russia, and most have found that the film obviously shows that the animal is not a man in a suit.
The resolution of a film, as stated in Kodak handbooks, is determined under laboratory conditions, as for example on an optical bench, by photographing a fl and white grating pattern, meaning 100% contrast modulation, onto the film.
Films, on the other hand, can be easily faked with modern equipment, but that equipment did not exist in 1967 when Patterson shot his footage.

 Halloween (1978)
Throughout the manipulative, morbid film, the suspenseful stalkings and killings are seen from the subjective vantage point of the killer's or 'peeping tom's' eyes, a few times while looking through a mask.
Almost every scene is filmed with a constantly-moving camera (the Steadicam variety) to make the audience feel disordered, totally insecure, unsettled and paranoid, believing that every ominous corner, shadow, noise, or space is potentially life-threatening or dangerous and that everyone will be a helpless victim of random violence.
When the film was aired in 1981 on commercial network television (available in a 1999 re-release DVD version), Carpenter was obliged to shoot about 12 minutes of additional footage to replace the gory and violent scenes, due to the numerous cuts made.

The Big Sleep's director, Michael Winner –who also adapted the screenplay– seems to have had good intentions.
Mitchum was 60 years old when The Big Sleep was filmed and is much to old for the character.
These two help salvage the second half of the film, and leave you wishing the rest of the casting were as good.

Still, as a big fan of detective movies I was intrigued by an alternate version of the film that made Bogart and Lauren Bacall an item.
In the original film, the underlying question of what happened to the elder daughter’s husband remains a mystery, however in this version that question is answered.
I would say The Big Sleep is a fairly dry detective story that would appeal to those who have not seen the original version but would be hard to watch for a fan of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in the 1946 version.

Big Sleep, The (1978) - Channel 4 Film review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
It's heresy to suggest that a Winner remake of a film starring Bogart and Bacall could be at least as good as the original but this is such a movie.
Mitchum is Raymond Chandler's private eye Marlowe investigating the flmail of a general's daughter, only to discover that his client is involved with the local Mob, abduction and murder.
However, Winner stays closer to the Chandler story than the earlier movie, and the result is a solid film noir that delivers a nasty little mystery.

 The Big Sleep (1978)
By the way, this film goes one step further by revealing who killed the person driving the car into the sea - a mystery that Chandler "accidentally" left unsolved in the book - but the "explanation" sounds fairly lame and unconvincing.
The film source itself is relatively clean, apart from the softness and the grain previously mentioned.
The Big Sleep is a 1978 remake that is far closer to the original Raymond Chandler novel, except it is set in London in the 1970s instead of Los Angeles in the 1940s.

 The Big Sleep (1946)
It is a very complex, confusing, logic-defying whodunit with a quintessential private detective (Marlowe), false leads, unforgettable dialogue and wisecracks, raw-edged characters, sexy women (including the two daughters of a dying millionaire, a bookseller, and others), tough action, gunplay, a series of electrifying scenes, and screen violence.
Although the film was released in mid-1946, it was actually filmed mostly in the fall of 1944 (about six months before Bacall and Bogart were married).
In 1997, the original 1945 pre-release version of the film was discovered - it was the film originally intended for release by Warner Bros, but shelved (except for a few showings overseas to US troops in August 1945).

The horror film has undergone vast changes throughout the past 100 years, but one thing has remained constant: the survival of the horror genre.
Because the horror film has undergone cyclical changes in theme and style, our lectures will focus on the impact of these cycles to other horror films and other films in general.

Fifth Generation filmmakers were assigned to regional film studios and collaborated extensively, working together in different roles to create a new visual style for Chinese cinema: a mise-en-scene of open landscape and the colors of land and sky, in place of what they saw as the artificial studio interiors of conventional Chinese film style.
The film ran into considerable trouble with the authorities and had to be amended in terms of plot and characterization before securing a release.

In a lot of ways, "The Big Sleep" must have seemed tailor-made for a remake in 1978.
But the deepest problem with this film is that while it follows the externals of Chandler's novel much more closely in terms of the plot and (most of) the dialogue, it fails utterly to capture the real heart and soul of the novel.

 Bigfoot / Sasquatch FAQ
The film is also evidence that in its case, the bigfoot phenomenon is not due to a catalogued animal that has been misidentified, since we do not recognize exactly what kind of creature is in the film.
The film could be caused by deliberate human fabrication, but we can tentatively rule out unwitting human fabrication in the form of "mass hallucination" and "a misidentified known animal" as the possible causes behind the Patterson Film.
If the film was taken at 24 frames per second, then Dr. Grieve found that the stride was similar to that of a human, although the bending at the knee in one position and the angle of the thigh at another were not similar to a typical stride in humans.

At-A-Glance Film Reviews: The Big Sleep (1978)
This remake of Raymond Chandler's classic detective story is actually more faithful to the story than Howard Hawks' 1946 Bogart classic -- which makes the one major departure all the more enigmatic, namely, transplanting the story from Los Angeles to London.
This one has small pleasures for Chandler fans interested in seeing scenes played out as he wrote them, but the film suffers grievously from Michael Winner's unsure directorial hand.
Granted, it's tough living up to one of the best and best-known detective films of all time, which smouldered with the hidden fears and passions of the characters, but this film doesn't really manage to establish itself in its own right.

Snyder’s film isn't likely to be considered a classic 20 years down the road like Romero's film is, but it's a winningly extreme episode in the ongoing adventures of Zombie and Harriet.
Swarming with zombies on both sides of the camera, the film is unrelentingly relentless, leaving no room for original director George Romero's wry satire on consumerism or his slow-paced, creeping undead.
