Topic: The Big Tease

The Big Tease: Well Rounded Entertainment
Bearing more than a passing resemblance to 1999’s box office bomb Drop Dead Gorgeous, The Big Tease is the latest in a long line of faux-documentaries aspiring to the buffoonish, dead-beat highs of Rob Reiner's seminal This Is Spinal Tap.
Big Tease star and co-writer (with Sacha Gervasi), Scottish comedian Craig Ferguson, is better known to U.S. audiences as Drew Carey's boss Mr.
Unfortunately for the comedian, too much of the film's brief 86-minute running time is spent tracing his odyssey to gain admittance into the competition, and not nearly enough on the really funny stuff: the deliriously over-the-top "Hair-Off" event itself, with its bevy of international competitors and their truly bizarre hair creations.

 `The Big Tease': Hollywood Mockumentary
Well, "The Big Tease," a campy, moderately amusing new comedy, will take you behind the scenes at this ultraexclusive event in which the world's leading hair stylists battle tooth and nail, comb and curler, for the Platinum Scissors Award, a priceless pair of gleaming shears once possessed by Czar Nicholas II of Russia.
A mock documentary directed by Kevin Allen, "The Big Tease" follows Crawford Mackenzie (Craig Ferguson), an indefatigably cheerful hairdresser from Glasgow, Scotland, all the way to Los Angeles, where he arrives under the mistaken impression that he is an official contestant.
If "The Big Tease" sustains an antic mood, it is crudely edited (most of an extended disco sequence seems to have landed on the cutting-room floor), and its closest thing to a villain, a hulking Scandinavian hairdresser named Stig (David Rasche) who is Crawford's rival for the Platinum Scissors, doesn't work as a character.

With "'Spinal Tap' meets 'Shampoo'" and "'Rocky' in curlers" as their rallying cry, the makers of the hairdressing mockumentary "The Big Tease" had seconds to spare.
It's hard to tell whether the bubbly spirit of "The Big Tease" derives more from the lead character or the blast Ferguson's having in his first starring role in a feature.
L.A. generates new fodder for satire almost daily, but the revelations in "The Big Tease" are strictly retreads: Limo drivers proffering head shots and pitching scripts.

Hailing from Knoxville, The Big Tease is a charming group of young, post-punk Southern hipsters looking to share their irresistible blend of rock, pop and funk.
The Big Tease, however, has done it with their first full-length release, Beautiful Addiction, which exudes enough pop and charm for radio, but rocks way too hard to be classified with the formulaic pop of today's mainstream music scene.
Contrary to their suggestive name, The Big Tease has defined themselves not only by the power and passion of their latest album, but also with their raucous and wild, but still undeniably "well-mannered" live performances.

SPLICEDwire | "The Big Tease" review (2000)
An attempt to do for hair stylists what "This Is Spinal Tap" did for heavy metal, "The Big Tease" is a middling mockumentary about a naive and falsely confident Glasgow beauty shop owner who flies to Los Angeles for a world champion hair competition (!), only to discover he's not really invited.
Co-written by and starring Craig Ferguson (the British boss on "The Drew Carey Show"), this comedy of the uncomfortable traces the emotional rollercoaster ride of flamboyant hairdresser Crawford Mackenzie, whose ego takes a beating when a back-stabbing, plastic personality publicist (Mary McCormack) explains his RSVP is for reserved seats in the audience, not on stage.
My problem with "The Big Tease" was that I found Ferguson's character grating and hard to root for, even in the face of outrageous back-stage sabotage by his rival/idol Stig Ludwiggssen (David Rache) -- the arrogant, golden-maned, famous and filthy rich owner of a Berverly Hills salon.

SCREEN IT! ARTISTIC REVIEW: THE BIG TEASE
Of course, much like the fashion industry, hairstyling for the rich and famous has become a big deal, although many of their more contemporary styles - much like the attire seen paraded down runways - wouldn't exactly mesh with the average Jane and Joe.
And just like those who design the clothes, those behind the haircuts and styling are now celebrities in their own right, having come a long way from the corner barber and beauty shops.
Generally amusing, but not terribly funny or particularly barbed in its view of the professional hairstyling world, the film may find a small niche audience, but will probably end up on video about as fast as a cut hair finds its way to the floor.

Review: To echo the Scottish vernacular that's one of its more winning aspects, there's a wee bit of fun to be had with "The Big Tease," a mockumentary about a Glasgow hairdresser's determination to win an international stylist competition.
Our protagonist, Crawford Mackenzie (Craig Ferguson, a regular on "The Drew Carey Show"), is the proverbial big fish in a small pond — a fact of which he remains blissfully unaware.
That is, it teases us with an occasional good line, sharp observation or well-placed cameo.

Warner Brothers' "The Big Tease" is a "fish out of water" tale in the tradition of such British films as "Bean." Unlike Bean, however, it's funny nearly all the way through.
Crawford arrives in La-La Land only to discover that his invitation was to be in the audience, not to compete - and the pencil necked bureaucrats running the show don't give a damn that he flew 9,000 miles to take on the best of the world.
Never to be put down or get depressed, Crawford sets out to jump through all the hoops necessary to qualify for the competition, only to find that they're still not going to let him "play" in the big leagues.
