The Big U - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Big U (1984) is Neal Stephenson's first published novel, a satire of campus life.
By the time Snow Crash was published, The Big U was out of print, and Stephenson was content to leave it that way.
The Big U's financial crisis and the lost library catalog are based on actual events.

Amazon.co.uk: The Big U: Books: Neal Stephenson   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
The Big U is Stephenson's send-up of college dormitory living: colliding monster stereos, hazing taken to the extreme, diddling tenured professors, cafeteria food-fights complete with Uzis and tanks, computer geeks, BMOC's, fraternal cliques, ineffectual student governments, and a myriad other things that seem to be part and parcel of the entire college 'experience'.
In the Big U's four towers live and work its 40,000 students; it is so vast that it is a world unto itself, with its own government, police force and culture, including multiple feuding tribes.
First novels are often autobiographical, and /The Big U/ has the feel of an impassioned rant by someone who has just escaped from higher education and has some stuff he needs to get off his chest.

 Big U Secrets...
You may think of the Big U as one of the last of the great classic liners.
That's when the US Navy dropped plans for an aircraft carrier that is said to have been pre-named UNITED STATES.
That torpedo ended up on a beach and was ever so quietly removed by the stealthy Royal Navy - and the maiden voyage of the Big U wasn't the least bit spoiled.

I was about to embark on Quicksilver when my wife picked up the Big U. This book is really close to being "great", in that Stephenson takes some pretty heavy (and, in my experience, deserved) jabs to the gut of the academic elite.
In the Big U, we witness a complete social meltdown, during which professors hole up to ponder slides of various samples of "scat" while the world crashes down (literally) around them.

 Big U - Tom Rinaldi
Ed Cantor acquired the "Big U" in 1996.
While the SS US Project also aims to see the ship saved, Cantor hopes to have the liner restored as a cruise ship rather than "stuffed and mounted" like Britain's Queen Mary, the only preserved Atlantic liner, now permanently moored as a hotel and convention center in Long Beach, California.
The ideal was a ship big enough to carry large numbers of people comfortably from point A to point B, and to move them as quickly as possible through what in the winter months are among the world's roughest seas.

The Big U (John's Book Pages)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
The Big U is a hilarious, manic satire on life at a big public university in the United States.
Stephenson has great riffs about the nonsensical nature of a large administration, the bizarre varieties of people who wouldn't be able to survive outside of academia, and the architectural ugliness of recently constructed university buildings.
Although it's funny, The Big U is conspicuously a first novel: the dialog often fails to ring true, the tone changes unpredictably, and the use of the first person was almost certainly a mistake: most of the book is in third person and the narrator is never developed into a real character.

The Big U follows these characters month by month through one school year in college - September to May. The story is really about the University but the characters give it context.
