These bands were frequently used in quaratine stations when the USA used to import birds.
For instance, my cockatiel Melonie's band says "CA LS 92 52." This means she was bred in California (the state is often written sideways), her breeder's initials or business abbreviation is L.S., she was hatched in 1992 and her ID # is 52.
If a bird is purchased and then later returned the seller can verify that the returned bird is in fact the same one sold.

Birds are very "cost-effective" and relatively easy to monitor as the equipment and materials needed to band are neither heavy or too expensive.

For the Birds opens with a plaintive, soothing instrumental aptly titled "In the Deep Shade." Guitar harmonics, brushed drums, violin and a smattering of piano eddy about calmly, sometimes moving forward rhythmically for a bar or two, but never truly settling into a prolonged groove of any kind.
The band handles noise best on "Headlong" by balancing it with resolutely melodic violin and lead guitar parts, which isn't to speak of the way they easily morph the gentle chorus refrain into an aching plea for help in the raging bridge.
Perhaps the album's single greatest flaw is that the band have chosen to concentrate almost too much on the slow and sparse, but they do it well enough that it's hard to complain too much.

We capture birds in mist-nets and band them, we were looking to attach radio-transmitters to young Palila to see how their movements and home range compare to adults.
