The story of Merlin was, of course, familiar enough in Elizabethan times, and a drama entitled Uter Pendragon is entered in Henslowe’s diary under date 29 April, 1597; the difficulty lies in determining what warrant, if any, the author had for degrading the circumstances of Merlin’s birth.

MERLIN looks great, has a decent story line, good casting (if a bit star studded for its own good - John Gielgud doesn't make it past the opening credits!) and is packed with more special effects than I have ever encountered in a made for TV special.
Well first off, it's a "made for TV film" which tends to lift the story away from some of the murkier acts and deeds which would have made it onto film if the family television viewing audience hadn't got to be considered.
It begins with the birth of Merlin and traces his life right up to his mysterious disappearance as myth and magic wane from developing Britain.

Merlin: Three Versions of His Birth   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Merlin is one of the most revered spiritual figures in written history.
The first written record of Merlin’s birth comes from Geoffrey of Monmouth, a cleric who taught at Oxford schools between 1129 and 1151 CE, and became the Bishop of St. Asaph in 1151.
Geoffrey presents Merlin as the son of an intensely Christian princess--perhaps the daughter of King Demetius or King Conaan--who was seduced by a demon or devil, or became pregnant without her knowledge.

There is not a single poetic passage in The Birth of Merlin, which will justify for an instant the hypothesis of Shakespeare's authorship.
The disjointed nature of the plot, moreover, the foolish and immature morality of the Modestia scenes, and the repeated appeals to the cheap make-shifts of sorcery and divination, stamp it as distinctively un-Shakespearean.
Among the distinctive features which could be said to be the hall-marks of Shakespearean drama are the distinctive use of significant imagery, felicity of expression, thematic coherence, economy of structure, a questioning and inventive approach to source material, and a persistent reassessment of the commonplace.
