Botticelli, Birth of Venus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
To these scholars the story of her birth was the symbol of mystery through which the divine message of beauty came into the world.
Venus has emerged from the sea on a shell which is driven to the shore by flying wind-gods amidst a shower of roses.
Botticelli's Venus is so beautiful that we do not notice the unnatural length of her neck, the steep fall of her shoulders and the queer way her left arm is hinged to the body.

 Birth of Venus
Cicero speaks of four, a daughter of Coelus and Light, one sprung from the froth of the sea, a third, daughter of Jupiter and the Nereid Dione, and a fourth born at Tyre, and the same as the Astarte of the Syrians.
Of these, however, the Venus sprung from the froth of the sea, after the mutilated part of the body of Uranus had been thrown there by Saturn, is the most known, and of her in particular ancient mythologists, as well as painters, make mention.
The rose, the myrtle, and the apple, were sacred to Venus; and among birds, the dove, the swan, and the sparrow, were her favorites; and among fishes, those called the aphya and the lycostomus.

Birth of Venus (after 1482) by Italian artist Sandro Botticelli is an allegorical painting.

The figure of Venus is taken from an antique statue, but the style is linear, suggesting a tapestry rather than something three-dimensional.

The Birth of Venus by BOTTICELLI, Sandro
The title of the Birth of Venus can be traced back to the 16th century.
What is depicted is not, however, the moment of the goddess' birth - the classical poet Hesiod describes her as rising from the foaming sea after Chronos cut off his father Uranus' penis and threw it into the ocean.
He described Venus as being driven towards the shore on a shell by Zephyr; and how an onlooker would have seen the flash in the goddess' eye and the Horae of the seasons standing on the shore in white garments, their flowing hair caressed by the wind.

Venus is closer to the sun than is the earth, which means that it can never be in the sky opposite the sun.
Venus then slowly grows to manhood, but when it reaches its brightest point, it quickly plunges into the earth, even as the Savior was killed in his prime.
Although the birth date of the Savior has been somewhat controversial, the evidence to me seems compelling that the Savior was born during the night preceding Thursday, 6 April, 1 BC, which is indicated as Passover that year.

Botticelli's painting captures the birth of Venus from the sea as a result of Venus having been conceived when the Titan Cronus castrated his father, the god Uranus, and cast the severed genitals into the sea, thus fertilizing it.
Thus her myth speaks to the birth of the soul, the spiritually conscious living eternal soul consciousness, that which exists eternally and is pure relative to the earthly experience.
The pure Venus Goddess consciousness is the most divine and most important thing which could be taught, gifted, encouraged, supported, or even only tolerated by all of us, whether she looks like she wandered out of a temple or a whorehouse...

It went from Lorenzo the Magnificent to all of Florence's humanism of this second half of the 15th century to finally be given to Botticelli, who thus scrupulously followed a text: the profane Birth of Venus and the coronation of the sacred Venus.

The Birth of Venus depicts a moment in Greek mythology in which Venus, the goddess of love, is the central point around which the artistic composition is formed.
To the right of Venus there is a nymph in the process of cloaking the nude goddess.
The fact that Venus is central to Boticelli's compositon illustrates his belief that in romantic relations women are the center of attention.

 Botticelli - Renaissance Master Artist
The Birth of Venus is probably the most famous of Botticelli's paintings (not least due to good advertising by Adobe ;)) and for many people it is the symbol of Medici Florentine art.
The shell that she travels upon is pushed by the wind of Zephyrus and Aura and she is welcomed by a girl wearing a gown embroidered with flowers or daisies, possibly one of the Three Graces.
However its not unreasonable to suggest that Botticelli intended the two paintings as a pair in homage to Venus and all that she stood for in Renaissance humanist philosophies.

Venus, although not anatomically or proportionally precise, is still a soft, voluptuous, idealized figure with an ethereal presence.
According to the neo-platonism philosophy the nude Venus born of the sea, as in Botticelli's work, was interchangable with the Virgin Mary.
On one canvas Botticelli has managed to capture the beauty of the ancient story of a birth of a goddess creating a harmonious, ethereal image that also documents an aspect of the times in which it was created.

Rather than Aphrodite being surprised at her bath, embarassed and ashamed, Havelock demonstrates that the nudity of the goddess signifies her divine birth from the sea and her role at Cnidus as Aphrodite Euploia ("fair voyage"), protectress of seafarers.
The pudica gesture is not indicative of her shame but her fertility and the hydria, not the bath, but her eternal youth through ritual cleansing and renewal.

Venus of Willendorf: 5. Earth Mother - Mother Goddess
Although the paradigm of the "Venus" of Willendorf as Mother Goddess persists, in recent years the figurine has also been interpreted as possibly functioning in a more gynaecological context, perhaps serving as a charm or amulet of some kind for women in connection with fertility.
At the time of its discovery, the statuette showed traces of red ochre pigment, which has been thought to symbolize, or serve as a surrogate of, the menstrual blood of women as a life-giving agent, as is the case in later traditions.
The emphasis given to the "Venus" of Willendorf's vulva and the possibility that the red ochre served as a blood substitute suggest that the figurine may have served some purpose in connection with female menstruation.
