The Black Album (Jay-Z) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Black Album was a 2003 hip hop music album by rapper Jay-Z.
Although the album showcases a plethora of hip hop's popular producers, it is one of the few Jay-Z albums with no guest appearances.
Most notably, the controversial "99 Problems" music video shows him being shot at the end, which he says signifies the death of Jay-Z. An a capella version of this album, with the Beatles ' self-titled album (the " White Album "), was in 2004 remixed into The Grey Album by DJ Danger Mouse.

The only issue that's puzzling about The Black Album [+] is why one of the best rappers needs to say goodbye -- unless, of course, he's simply afraid of being taken for granted and wants listeners to imagine a rap world without him.

Jay-Z has been famous for putting out albums at a furious pace, releasing nine albums since 1996, but The Black Album is easily his most focused and furious.
While Jay was prone to wandering on his past albums, The Black Album is squarely based on reflection on his career, and his impending retirement.
The Black Album is the perfect retirement record, and it has to be heard to be believed.

Jay-Z: The Black Album - PopMatters Music Review
Whether The Black Album is truly, as Jay has continuously proclaimed, his final record or not, he has most definitely constructed an inspired musical documentary of his life, as both a business man and an artist, that will last as an inspiration for emcees years in the making.
However, it is in this light that if The Black Album is indeed Jay's final record, he is calling it quits at the top of his artistic powers, having finally dropped a consistent album that strikes the perfect balance between the business man and the backpacker.
The album begins with the conceptual brilliance of "December 4th", named after the day Jay was born.

 The Black Album Jay-Z ummmmm
If The Black Album is truly Jay-Z's last statement before retirement, he at least goes out near the top of his game.
Jay's lyrically abilities aren't really impressive compared to some of the other rappers out now, and he repeats himself many times on this album about the same stuff such as being the best rapper alive.
The worst song on the album is probably "Change Clothes." The beat is alright and Jay again delivers but the point behind the song and the chorus is pretty lame.

Grey Tuesday - Free the Grey Album February 24
Jay-Z released an a capella version of his Black Album to make remixes easier, and the The Grey Album is just one of many.
DJ Danger Mouse created a remix of Jay-Z's the Black Album and the Beatles White Album, and called it the Grey Album.
Danger Mouse’s album is one of the most "respectful" and undeniably positive examples of sampling; it honors both the Beatles and Jay-Z. Yet the lawyers and bureaucrats at EMI have shown zero flexibility and not a glimmer of interest in the artistic significance of this work.

Jay-Z: The Black Album: Pitchfork Review
The Black Album, touted as his final release, offers some answers, though none as clear-cut as what may or may not be the truth: that it's all an elaborate publicity stunt.
Or maybe it's not: Jay has cut an album every year for the past seven years; that he'd want a break of some sort now is understandable.
The prospect of hip-hop's finest producers laying down tracks for the final LP from the rap world's brightest talent has made The Black Album one of the most anticipated rap records of the decade.

 Jay-Z: The Black Album Unveiled : Daily Hip-Hop News : SOHH.com
The Black Album is undoubtedly a deep look at Jay-Z before fame, success and Reasonable Doubt.
And Jay finally offered a detailed response to the ultimate question - "What happens after The Black Album ?" "I wanted to just put the album out [and leave] but my partners were like...for all that money we gave you..." he chuckled.
On the lyrical side of things, Jay's content mirrored previous classics with a bit of introspection here, a dash of braggadocio there, rounded off with some innovative concepts and a surprising homage to a few authentic rap players.

mtv.com - News - Jay-Z's Black Album Coming Sooner Than Planned
It's not that Jay is elated that his last project has been floating around in the hands of music pirates, he's just taking it in stride (see "Jay-Z's The Black Album : The End Of An Era").
A copy of what's supposed to be Jay-Z's last LP has made its way onto the Internet, so Roc-A-Fella has moved the album's release date up two weeks, from November 28 to November 14.
Jay said that while the pirating has hurt the album's set-up, he has a few tricks up his Roc-A-Wear sleeve so sales don't slack.

 Hour.ca - Music - Spin - The Black Album - Jay-Z
This album is good, but there are forgettable album fillers, with Jay Hova rhyming the entire album without guests.
But as to the Black album i think this is his best album yet.
Take the three singles off the album: "Change Clothes" is your Neptunes-produced danceable hit, "Dirt Off Your Shoulders" is as dirty as the title entails it to be and "99 Problems" in your rock-infused Rick Rubin explosive single that will appeal to hip hop and rock fans alike.

The album’s sequel was a messy victory celebration — long, overindulgent, but with enough gems that ill-conceived collaborations with Lenny Kravitz and lukewarm singles were easily forgiven (as if Jay needed our forgiveness!).

 The Black Album - Jay-Z - Buy @ SmokeCDs.com music cd store
Apparently the 'Black Album' is mega-successful rapper Jay-Zs last, whether this is a clever marketing ploy by his hugely successful Roc-A-Fella label or reality, a new album from a man with such a high profile is always welcome, and after the multi-platinum success of his previous work, a lot is also expected.
Other producers to appear include Rick Rubin, Just Blaze and Eminem, and obviously no expense was spared in that department, but of course Jay-Z has always been one to wear success on his sleeve and when youve had as much as he has why wouldnt you.
It is an album that works from start to finish, which few hip-hop albums manage, showing a more mature, more focused artist completely comfortable in his current environment, a master of the format whose vision is realised, and for those reasons you cant help but be drawn in by this album.

When DJ Danger Mouse began garnering attention for "The Grey Album," his inventive remix of a cappella tracks from Jay-Z's "The Black Album" and music from the Beatles' eponymous 1968 album commonly known as "The White Album," it was always a question when -- not if -- his unauthorized project would be shut down.
The Grey Album is a remix of Jay-Z's Black Album made using the Beatles' White Album as the sole source material.
While DJs and producers have created other hues of The Black Album, such as The Brown Album and The White Album, don't expect those to be pulled from shells.

I then read a New York Times article about a web site called "The Jay-Z Construction Set" which compiled all of the materials you needed to remix your own version of Jay-Z. It had the acappella version of the Black album, Dangermouse's Grey Album, sample beats, and various remixes that other DJ's had already made.
Anyway, when all this hoopla about DJ Dangermouse's remix of Jay-Z's Black album and the Beatle's White album hit the Internet, I really wasn't all that interested.
Most surprisingly of all is the fact that this is Jay-Z's last album and that he is retiring from the music business.

CHEAP COLOGNE "The Double Black Album" (www.broke-ass.com): An inevitable combination: Jay-Z meets Metallica's black album, the 1991 "Metallica."
