The Black Cauldron (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The bulk of the cut scenes involved the undead "Cauldron Born", who are used as the Horned King's army in the final act of the film.
While most of the scenes were seamlessly removed from the film, one particular cut involving a Cauldron Born killing a person by slicing his neck and torso created a rather recognizable lapse due to the fact that the removal of the scene creates a jump in the film's soundtrack.
A scene at the beginning of the film when Hen uses her powers in the pail of water, the vision of The Horned King is a re-used section of the Night on Bald Mountain scene in the movie Fantasia.

The Black Cauldron: Gold Classic Collection (1985)
After nearly 20 years of consistently lackluster animated films, in the early Eighties Disney tried to reinvigorate this department with a tremendously ambitious and epic tale: an adaptation of Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain novels called The Black Cauldron.
One of the oddest defects I discerned during The Black Cauldron involved a mild flickering effect.
Unfortunately, "Quest for the Black Cauldron" doesn't follow in the footsteps of The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr.

Filmtracks: The Black Cauldron (Elmer Bernstein)
Largely ignored commercially, the score for The Black Cauldron has hidden in the depths of the out-of-print and bootleg market, and while the music Bernstein wrote isn't earth-shattering (or, in other words, worth a desperate search for just this title), it is a likable and interesting symphonic score from start to end.
Its role in The Black Cauldron is central, for Bernstein was nowhere as advanced as, say, Jerry Goldsmith, in 1985 when it came to using synthesizers to enhance the fantasy element.
The downfall of The Black Cauldron for Bernstein, however, would be the lack of transparency in his themes and development, something that really needs to be made clear in a children's film.

Stomp Tokyo Video Reviews - Black Cauldron
Released in 1985, it was the only Disney animated film to receive a PG rating, and it came at a very dark time in the history of Disney's animation studio.
Over the course of the film's 80 minutes, Taran must retrieve Hen Wen after her escape from her pen, befriend a furry sidekick character named Gurgi, fall in love with Princess Eilonwy, and somehow destroy the power of the Black Cauldron.
The film's Taran was every bit as immature as his counterpart in the books, but his sense of nobility and duty never seemed to come through.

 The Black Cauldron (1985)
Much of this is simply a reflection of the way the film was made, for softer, pastelly colours are often to the fore, especially away from the villain's castle.
The constant aliasing really does detract from the whole film, and you know that you are in for large doses of it from the opening credits.
I checked out the extras before watching the film and this seemed to be no impediment to answering the questions necessary to get to the fl cauldron before The Horned King (he moves whenever you answer a question wrong - four wrong answers and he wins).

Nigel Hawthorne : Films : Review : The Black Cauldron
I recall some controversy at the time over the first-ever PG rating for a Disney film, and later I learned the subject matter was deemed too dark for children.
It looked as though The Black Cauldron would languish forever in the Disney vaults (and in the memories of a lucky few kids who actually saw it) and that I would never get a chance to see it.

Shortly before the film's release to theaters, newly appointed Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg ordered several scenes from The Black Cauldron be cut due to fear that the graphic nature of them would scare young children.
While most of the deleted scenes were seamlessly cut from the film, one particularly cut involving a Cauldron Born killing a victim created a rather recognizable cut due to the fact that the removal of the scene creates a jump in the film's soundtrack.

The Black Cauldron is quite an oddity, especially considering it's a Disney cartoon.
The Black Cauldron is one of those pre-Little Mermaid Disney flicks that doesn't really fit in with the overall Disney oeuvre.
But The Black Cauldron does have some fantastic sequences in it (the rise of the dead army is particularly neat), so for animation buffs, this may be worth a look.

 Richard Rich - Animation Director
As is the case with most directors of animated films, the name of Richard Rich may not be well known to the typical movie-goer.
It was the first Disney animated feature to receive a PG rating: skeletons and other frightening creatures were animated in such a realistic style that the film was considered potentially inappropriate for younger children.
"The Black Cauldron," which cost what at that time was a record $25 million to make, and earned over $21 in U.S. box office receipts, is clearly the more interesting of Rich's two Disney features.

The Black Cauldron is an unusual film from Disney that was supposed to mark a new era for its animation division.
A departure from the company's usual tendency to cheer up mythical stories, The Black Cauldron is an appropriately dark adventure-fantasy that benefits from the absence of any superfluous songs.
Perhaps due to the PG rating, surreal settings, and evil characters, The Black Cauldron was a huge commercial flop upon its theatrical release, but it remains notable as an uncommonly risky Disney animated feature.
