PBS - THE WEST - George Crook
Having accomplished his mission in Arizona, Crook was transferred to the northern Plains in 1875, where he was first given the impossible task of removing a rapidly growing hoard of gold miners from the Black Hills.
In this campaign his troops were forced to retreat from Lakota and Cheyenne warriors led by Crazy Horse in a battle at Rosebud Creek, a defeat that denied reinforcements to George Armstrong Custer and may have contributed to his devastating loss at the Little Bighorn.
Finally, in 1886, Crook was relieved of command and saw his long-time rival, General Nelson A. Miles, bring an end to the long Apache war by exiling Geronimo and his band to Florida.

The Black Crook - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Black Crook is considered to be the first piece of musical theatre that conforms to the modern notion of a "book musical." It opened on September 12, 1866 at Niblo's Garden on Broadway, New York City and ran for a record-breaking 475 performances.
The Black Crook is considered a prototype of the modern musical in that its popular songs and dances are interspersed throughout a unifying play and performed by the actors.
The British production of The Black Crook, which opened at the Alhambra Theatre on December 23, 1872, was an opera-bouffe version based on the same French source material, with new music by Frederic Clay and Georges Jacobi.

Wheatley later claimed that he spent the then-unheard of sum of $25,000 to produce The Black Crook (1866 - 474) The opening night performance on September 12 lasted a bottom-numbing five and a half hours, but audiences were too dazzled to complain.
The Black Crook's tortured plot stole elements from Goethe's Faust, Weber's Der Freischutz, and several other well-known works.
While that is debatable, The Black Crook did prove how profitable musical theater could be in the United States.

 American Musical Theatre: An Introduction
The sensational extravaganza, The Black Crook, produced in New York on September 12, 1866--and the most successful theatrical production put on in America up to that time--was, it is true, written by Americans.
It is also true that The Black Crook introduced some of the ritual subsequently identifying American musical comedy: chorus girls, ornate production numbers, elaborate costuming, songs provocative with sexual innuendos, large dance numbers and so forth.
It was a frank imitation of the European extravaganzas which had been visiting the United States for a number of years, beginning with Novelty, with the Laying of the Atlantic Cable, produced in New York in 1857 by the Ronzani troupe, a european ballet company.

Bible Black, Brian Crook’s (Terminals, Renderers, Flies Inside The Sun) second solo album might have benefited from an EP’s stern discipline.
He’s throttled back on his full-throated, death-rattle singing of yore, opting instead to moan tragically over some bleak guitar strumming spiked with the occasional shot-in-the-dark distorto lead and stray electronic blip.
Taken a song at a time, or starting half-way through (for some reason the best songs are pushed to the second half), Bible Black is pretty swell.

"The Crook: A Revival" is loosely inspired by "The Black Crook" (1866), generally considered the first Broadway musical.
A combination of a Faustian folk tale and burlesque-style song and dance numbers that ran over five hours and played across the continent for 30 years, the original show set the formula for American blockbuster stage shows - and eventually movies.
Utilizing elements of theater, dance, performance art, and low-tech lighting and sound, "The Crook: A Rehearsal" deconstructs scenes and characters from the original show in a contemporary context.
