"The Black Stallion Returns" is shot in 1.85:1, and I saw it in 1.33:1 because of the TV-network cut it down as usual.
I saw "The Black Stallion Returns" before I saw 'The Black Stallion', I think that is the best way to enjoy this sequel (it is somehow rather independent from the first one).

The Black Stallion Returns is one work within the expansive Black Stallion series, but those who haven't watched or read the original Black Stallion novel/film need not worry about being lost if they jump straight to this one.

I imagine it would be a tough task to attempt to match the splendor of the original The Black Stallion (1979), which featured the amazing work of director Carroll Ballard and cinematographer Caleb Deschanel.
Black levels are rather muddy, and some of the night sequences suffer from a lack of shadow depth.
MGM has repackaged The Black Stallion Returns in a low-priced 2-pack, along with the far superior The Black Stallion.

Now we have "The Black Stallion Returns," which also is well done, and which also ends in a big horse race, and which is very predictable.
I can imagine one set of circumstances under which you might want to see this picture: If you're a kid, and you loved "The Black Stallion," and want to see more of the same stuff, with the same kid (Kelly Reno) and the same horse (Cassole), then this might be the movie for you.
The stallion is living happily on a farm with Reno and his mother (Teri Garr).

They offer shots of the beautiful desolation of the desert (the movie was shot in Namibia), the rise and fall of the sun, the horse galloping across the sands as the music swells to signify nothing much more than the process making a spectacle of itself.
At 45 minutes in length, "The Young Black Stallion" hardly has time to establish much in the way of character, but people tend to get lost in the vastness of the IMAX screen unless they are as swaggering as horsemen Rhamon (Gerard Rudolf) and Mansoor (Ali Al Ameri).
But "The Young Black Stallion" is not the movie destined to showcase the dramatic possibilities of the IMAX format.

Evidently, the scoring for The Black Stallion was a rocky one where the director fell out with the original composer, Coppola scored the picture with help from Shirley Walker, but then some re-scoring was done, hence the complicated credits in the track listing.
The notes for The Black Stallion Returns are by the director, Robert Dulva and suggest a considerably more enjoyable collaboration - despite the problems of communicating - with much missed composer par excellence Georges Delerue.
While The Black Stallion receives top billing by default, it is almost certainly Delerue's classy score for the sequel to which I will return more often.

These DVDs aren't from those films, they are from the 1990 television series The Adventures of the Black Stallion, which returned Rooney to the role of Henry Dailey, and starred Richard Ian Cox as young Alec Ramsey.
Though the titles of the DVDs released February 15th were meant to recall the classic Walter Farley books, and as a side-effect confused people into thinking these were the earlier movies, the releases actually contain episodes from the 2nd Season of the Canadian television show that ran on YTV for three years.
