  DVDFILE.COM: The Blue Lagoon review
Columbia continues their marvelous work by mastering The Blue Lagoon in high-definition and then downconverting for this disc (a full-frame version is contained on the other side).
Colors are strong and nicely rendered with the obvious predomination of blue in the film, though the greens of the jungle are equally impressive.
Produced in 1980, stereo theatrical soundtracks were still in a bit of an experimentation period.

Everyone has seen the 1980 movie with Brooke Shields, but few remember the 1949 British version starring Jean Simmons, and hardly anyone has read the 1908 novel on which the movies were based.
In 1949, a movie about teenagers coupling on a desert island could not cast teenage actors in the roles, so we were actually identifying with a certified grown-up, 21-year-old Jean Simmons, who had already played opposite Olivier in Hamlet.
Return to the Blue Lagoon is a second-generation orgy about the son of the dead Em and Michael and the daughter of a widow on the ship that rescued him.

As today's divers are smoothly eased into their BC backpacks with 80-cubic foot aluminum tanks and regulators capably mounted for them by their boat driver, most haven't a clue as to how Kimiuo made diving possible in Truk.
Blue Lagoon Dive Shop was thus born on rented land about a half mile from the one-mile long airport runway.
In 1980 we went on an extensive wreck search -- without the aid of the photographs which have since been unearthed nor GPS, with just Kimiuo's 36-year old recollection -- which we referred to as 'Kimiuo's Scientific Nose,' --- and a simple depth recorder.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: Return to the Blue Lagoon | Deseret Morning News Web edition
If you remember "The Blue Lagoon" (the 1980 version, not the 1949 original) you may recall that at the end of that movie the principal characters, played by Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins, died in a boat on the ocean.
I realize I've approached all of this rather frivolously, and it is one of the silliest movies of the year.
But I don't mean to make light of an obviously salacious element here: Producer-director William A. Graham has made a movie that seems to leer at his primary subjects, especially Jovovich, who has a nude scene and a wet T-shirt scene, among others, that are clearly here for no purpose other than ogling.

Return to the Blue Lagoon is, of course, a sequel to 1980's Blue Lagoon starring Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins.
The movie is based on a book called The Garden of God by Henry De Vere Stacpoole, who also wrote the Blue Lagoon and other books based on his travels as a Ship's surgeon around the turn of the last century.
The disc itself features only a full screen version of the film, which is a shame since the cinematography (or at least the scenery) is pretty good.
