Rita Hayworth And The Shawshank Redemption: Obviously the blueprint for the film, this novella is a story of prison life and one man's journey through the years enduring the fact that he was wrongly accused of his wife's murder.
The novella was dedicated to Peter and Susan Straub, and I think it shows the obvious influence of horror maestro Straub from top to bottom (which, to my mind, is a good thing).

Amazon.com: Books: Lord Peter : The Complete Lord Peter Wimsey Stories
For the most part, most of my favorite Lord Peter short stories fall into this group, with the exception of "The Undignified Melodrama of the Bone of Contention", an enormous (and to me, tedious) novella wherein the will of a recently deceased old reprobate was deliberately designed to create bad blood between his sons.
This omnibus edition of all the Lord Peter Wimsey short stories consists of the stories from _Hangman's Holiday_, _In the Teeth of the Evidence_, _Lord Peter Views the Body_, and _Striding Folly_ (the final 3 stories of _Lord Peter_), those of _Striding Folly_ being the most difficult to get outside the omnibus edition.
Lord Peter's eldest does not disappoint in his spirit or his intelligence, and Peter and Harriet fulfill all expectations as they lovingly handle their children.

The Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore is recognizable on the righthand wall with an unusual cupola, quite unlike the one by Brunelleschi, which in fact was not to be carried out until the following century.
This was probably the design for the cupola that Andrea di Bonaiuto presented in 1365 to the Opera del Duomo but which was later rejected.

Waldo is portrayed as embittered by his sense of physical inadequacy, and in the end he discovers a source of energy from a parallel universe that allows him to discard his mechanical aids in favor of his (newly-strengthened) biological body.

Since then the "locked room mystery" (in which the victim's body is found in a locked room with seemingly no possible way out for a killer) has been a staple of the mystery genre.
The second variation on the locked room mystery is "The Adventure of the Glass Room" which is (unless someone discovers another) the first and only "locked room within a locked room" mystery.

In the Flesh - Christa Wolf
Wolf conveys the feeling of the various stages the patient finds herself at convincingly, from moments of resignation to the surprising changes in the body.
Words are all she has, and this stream of them that makes up the novella is the hold she needs to get through the ordeal.
The effect is even more obvious in the German original, but even in the English Wolf's use of extremely short sentences at moments when the patient is particularly weak and lost -- and then longer, more flowing sentences, either when she is stronger or drifting off -- is particularly effective.

salon :: :: books :: review :: "The Beast God Forgot to Invent" by Jim Harrison, By Jonathan Miles :: Page 1
Harrison's Brown Dog, a ne'er-do-well Michigan Indian, first appeared in an eponymous novella in "The Woman Lit by Fireflies." Brown Dog is Harrison at his comic best: A hapless, rambling, vulgar antihero, Brown Dog is nothing less than the Don Quixote of the Upper Peninsula.
Harrison has been prowling the literary edges for four decades now, stubbornly eluding the snares of critical reduction -- including such dim taggings as "macho" and "regional" -- while producing a body of work so lushly idiosyncratic as to thwart even the gentlest efforts at classification.
The title novella, set in Harrison's native Michigan, takes the guise of a written report to the Alger County coroner -- a report that, like the life (or rather death) it purports to describe, goes beautifully haywire.
