Bold Fenian Men (Down by the glenside) Lyrics
When I was a young girl, their marching and drilling Awoke in the glenside sounds awesome and thrilling They loved poor old Ireland and to die they were willing Glory O, Glory O, to the bold Fenian men.
Some died on the glenside, some died near a stranger And wise men have told us that their cause was a failure They fought for old Ireland and they never feared danger Glory O, Glory O, to the bold Fenian men
I passed on my way, God be praised that I met her Be life long or short, sure I'll never forget her We may have brave men, but we'll never have better Glory O, Glory O, to the bold Fenian men

Theobald Wolfe Tone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An able pamphlet attacking the administration of the marquess of Buckingham in 1790 brought him to the notice of the Whig club; and in September 1791 he wrote a remarkable essay over the signature "A Northern Whig," of which 10,000 copies were said to have been sold.
Tone expressed contempt for the constitution which Grattan had so triumphantly extorted from the British government in 1782; and, himself an Anglican, he urged co-operation between the different religious sects in Ireland as the only means of obtaining complete redress of Irish grievances.
The tawdry and exaggerated rhetoric; the petty vanity and jealousies; the weak sentimentalism; the utter incapacity for proportioning means to ends, and for grasping the stern realities of things, which so commonly disfigure the lives and conduct even of the more honest members of his class, were wholly alien to his nature.

 Fenians
The Fenians team of 1969 were seen as pretenders to the throne as opposed to genuine contenders.
When asked if the Fenians were rated Georgie Leahy responds 'Yes, but only as Junior Champions - nobody expected them to contest a county final never mind win one, except maybe themselves of course!' That the Fenians did both in the same year is a testament to a team determined to gain recognition and quickly.
In reaching the county final of 1974, the Fenians arrived on the cusp of an unprecedented achievement.

The development of the Fenian movement with its obvious influence for self determination, grew rapidly amongst the men and women of Ireland.
Someone behind the barricade fired a shot before the order was given and Trant and his men took to their heels across the fields, towards a slate house on the brow of a hill.
James Stephens, the Fenian Leader was born in Kilkenny City in the year 1825 and died in Dublin in 1901.

So it was very surprising to see her standing in Milltown Cemetery on Tuesday belting out The Bold Fenian Men at Joe Cahill's funeral.
The fl berets and trousers of the marching men are substantially smarter than in scruffier, pre-1994 times and so don't make an embarrassing back-drop for a leading folk-singer.
And there was never any chance on Tuesday of those nasty men with woolly faces firing a few shots in the air and poor Frances finding herself in a compromising situation or even a police cell.

It happened one day when the bold I.R.A Set out to fight for their land With an old Thompson gun put the troops on the run And return to their home was their plan 3.
In hills and farms the call to arms Was heard by one and all, And from the glens came brave young men To answer Ireland's call.
And from the plains of Royal Meath Strong men came hurrying through; While Brittania's sons with their long-range guns Sailed in from the foggy dew.

Part three details the rise of the Nationalist cause in the wake of Parnell's fall and the rise of the I.R.B./I.R.A. in the late Victorian era up through the Civil war of the 1920s.

I heard this song below as a child on vinyl and it has haunted me every year since and reminds me of a recent post on IMC also referring to these "Bold Fenian Men" of the late 1700's, written in the Gaelic which some still have in parts of Canada apparently.
An interesting comparison with the oft quoted dregs of the middle class said to infest a certain political party with huge existential angst at the moment.

Our theme in this medley is Irish uprisings: firs the 1798 Rebellion in the The Rising of the Moon (#67, More Irish Street Ballads); secondly, the 1848 Fenian uprising in Bold Fenian Men; and then the Pikeman's March (instrumental).
The Rising is commonly sung to the tune of the "Wearin' of the Green", but O Lochlainn gives this superior version.
