This ballad is Child Ballad #181 (The Bonny Earl of Murray).
James Stewart, 2nd Earl of Moray (Lord Doune) was the son-in-law of the regent (also James Stewart).
James VI of Scotland suspected Moray, had been involved with the Earl of Bothwell (Francis Stewart, nephew of James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell who had wed Mary, Queen of Scots) in an attempt on the king's life.

The Mormaerdom or Kingdom of Moray was a lordship in High Medieval Scotland that was destroyed by King David I of Scotland in 1130.
The title, Earl of Moray, has been created several times in the Peerage of Scotland.  It was first bestowed on Thomas Randolph in 1314.
He was murdered by George Gordon, 1st Marquess of Huntly in 1592, and is the subject of the ballad ‘The Bonnie Earl of Moray’.

The 4th Earl known as "Cock of the North" had aspirations to marry one of his sons to Mary, Queen of Scots and through a series of misunderstandings there was a rebellion which brought about the collapse of Gordon power after defeat at Corrichie in 1562.

This event was a fortuitous for both Doune Cricket Club, and the village alike as the Earl granted a 5-acre field in the centre of the village for cricket.
The home games from 1994 onward were played on the same ground that was donated by the Earl in the late 1800's, this though was about to change, as the field behind the primary school was made available to the club on long lease.

Doune Castle is probably one of Scotland's best examples of mediaeval castles, having been built by the Regent Albany in the early Fifteenth Century.
