The Book of Five Rings - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The five "books" refer to the idea that there are different elements of battle, just as there are different physical elements in life, as described by Buddhism, Shinto, and other Eastern religions.
He also notes that the gun is somewhat lesser than the Bow, as particularly at that time, guns were not very accurate at ranges any longer than point-blank, as well as the obvious disadvantage that you could not see the bullet and adjust your aim as you would with a bow.
The idea of timing explained within the ground book is that you must be able to adapt your strategy to timing with your skill, in that you must know when to attack and when not to attack.

The Book of Five Rings outlines his lifelong attitude to competition of any kind, and I for one gobbled it up.
As the author reminds us again and again, the five scrolls are there to support the oral, technical teaching which he gave his students.
Likewise, each of the five spheres is aimed at developing the correct attitude, with technique merely being secondary.

A warning: A Book of Five Rings is not, as many would have you believe, a book for business strategists (although I suppose one can take many of Musashi's lessons metaphorically and apply them to business and life in general).
If you are not of the martial mind, and are looking for a great book to apply to daily life or business, look elsewhere--you won't get much from this book (unless of course you are looking to appear exotic to your friends for quoting from it).

The Lone Samurai is a landmark biography of Miyamoto Musashi, the legendary Japanese figure known throughout the world as a master swordsman, spiritual seeker, and author of The Book of Five Rings.
With a compassionate yet critical eye, William Scott Wilson delves into the workings of Musashi's mind as the iconoclastic samurai wrestled with philosophical and spiritual ideas that are as relevant today as they were in his times.
Wilson's other translations include The Book of Five Rings, The Life-Giving Sword, The Unfettered Mind, the Eiji Yoshikawa novel Taiko, and Ideals of the Samurai, which has been used as a college textbook on Japanese history and thought.
