From this, it can be conjectured that the "beast" referred to in The Book of Mozilla is a type of fire-breathing lizard, which can be viewed as a metaphor for, or personification of Netscape.
The Book of Mozilla first appeared in Netscape 1.1 (released in 1995) and can be found in every subsequent 1.x, 2.x, 3.x and 4.x version.
This verse was included in all Mozilla builds until October 1998, when a rewrite of much of the Mozilla code meant that the Easter egg was lost.

Mozilla 1.0 was released on June 5th, 2002, after more than four years of development as an open source project.
In the year since this book was published, new Mozilla releases have continued to improve and evolve.
The book's contents were written with Mozilla 1.0.x in mind, so it is important to be aware of this when trying to use more recent versions such as Mozilla 1.4 or one of the Phoenix/Firebird releases.

Pretty hilarious quote from the fictious book that the developers of Mozilla would include this in the browser.

Recently I was trying the "about:mozilla" thing in Firefox and sure enough, there was the verse from the Book of Mozilla.
Then I though 'I wonder if about:firefox would work?' When I tried it, Firefox came up with a page like the first, but it was a different verse; it said something about dark clouds coming and the "great bird thought for a minute and suddenly changed its form to that of a fox"...
Both of them are verses from the "Book of Mozilla".
