The Bourne Identity offers almost nothing in the way of conventional solutions to its puzzles--it isn't that the plot is particularly Byzantine, it's that the film steadfastly resists providing the resolutions that jaded audiences have come to expect.
The Bourne Identity is brilliant filmmaking, a testament to the editor's craft (Saar Klein) scored by a wise low-key techno-orchestration by composer John Powell that speaks to Liman's knack for using music to augment a scene (while leaving it unobscured) rather than narrate it.

Cinema Confidential Review: The Bourne Identity (2002)
Based on Robert Ludlum’s 1980 novel, the melodramatic spin on the story is that Bourne is an amnesiac who is rescued by a crew of a fishing boat off the coast of Italy and has to reassemble his past to figure out who he was and why the CIA is after him.
Another interesting sequence is when Bourne is stuck inside a countryside house with the knowledge that a sniper awaits outside for him, and his strategy to get out of the house swiftly and safely is a sleek and cunning piece of maneuvering.
Bourne turns the sniper into a lame duck that becomes the hunted, and his chess-move genius is brilliantly designed and lucidly photographed.

 The Bourne Identity
Thinking more about it, "The Bourne Identity's" success hinged on excitement-an excitement generated by three factors: a sense of momentum that kept me engaged, unique action set pieces that did not overstay their welcome, and filmmakers who seemed just as interested in making this adventure fun as they did in making it believable.
While Bourne's ultimate identity is not as surprising as we might like, enough fun has been generated in the journey itself.

Shimes' Review of The Bourne Identity
Published in 1980, the book of The Bourne Identity is the first in a series of three big, pulpy spy novels in which the CIA has infinite resources at its command and could possibly outwit both Bill Gates and and the KGB if it had to.
In loss of identity stories, the main character has to reconstruct who he is—not just who he is, but in the sense of what kind of person he is. In the book, Bourne thinks he might be a paid assassin, and engages in a real conflict over whether or not he was a "good" guy.
Her sexuality should be a weapon that attacks Bourne's human side, thus drawing him further away from his life as cyborg-ish killer, but Liman only gives us a momentary glimpse of the sexual tension between the two.

The Bourne Identity: Cinephiles Movie Review
The Bourne Identity, directed by Doug Liman (Swingers) and based on the novel by Robert Ludlum, focuses on a young, male protagonist who struggles to recover from amnesia, yet who finds instead strong incentives not to, after gathering enough evidence that point to his turbulent past and an extremely risky profession.
The Bourne Identity tries to create suspense by assigning its character the difficult mission of piecing together evidence that may reveal his true identity and bring back his memory, while simultaneously establishing the convenience of being assumed dead by his enemies.
However, when dangerous enemies discover Jason Bourne is alive and launch their searches, the plot degenerates into a series of persecution scenes that sacrifice further character development in favor of thrill-seeking action.

For its first half, The Bourne Identity balances between droll comedy and paranoiac suspense, with a new, more menacing opponent hiding in every shadow and Bourne as surprised as we are by his ingenuity at dispatching them.
