The boys from Syracuse 1938 - Lyrics by Lorenz Hart
Sure enough, an aged merchant from Syracuse has been found and brought before the Duke, but all we hear of them, in a brilliant bit of musical theater, are two clarinets, an E flat and a bass (backed with other orchestration here).
The unhappiest couple in Ephesus are now Luciana, in love with a man she believes is her sister's husband, and Antipholus of Syracuse, in love with a woman who pushes him away, pursued by another who claims to be his wife, and generally lost in the Twilight Zone.

The new Roundabout production of The Boys From Syracuse at the American Airlines Theatre is a fairly happy example of the latter.
Even if this production is an imperfect vehicle for the songs, this Boys From Syracuse is a perfectly acceptable vehicle for giving its audience an old-fashioned good time.

`Boys from Syracuse' better than Broadway
Meanwhile, visiting from Syracuse are another Antipholus (song-and dance man Denis Lambert) and his servant Dromio (Eric Santagata.) Everyone looks fabulous in Rebecca Senske's giddy costuming, a witty match to Mr.
Not only does everybody in Ephesus confuse them, but the unmarried Antipholus falls in love (at first sight, natch) with the sister of his "wife." Love- and guilt-struck Angel Reda is the best I've seen her, and that's saying a lot.
Boys is chock-full of wonderful songs, some of which will be new to a 21st century audience's ears.

The Boys from Syracuse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Boys from Syracuse is a musical by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, based on William Shakespeare's play, The Comedy of Errors, as adapted by librettist George Abbott, who also directed.
The original production opened at the Alvin Theater in New York on November 23, 1938, and ran for 235 performances, and starred Jimmy Savo, Eddie Albert, Muriel Angelus, and Marcy Westcott.
Following Shakespeare's play closely, the plot details the adventures and romantic mix-ups of long-separated identical twins Antipholus of Ephesus and Antipholus of Syracuse, whose servants, the two Dromios, are also long-separated identical twins.

This riotous tale takes place in Ephesus (in ancient Asia Minor) and concerns the efforts of these two boys from Syracuse--Anthipholus and his servant Dromio--to find their long-lost twins who, for reason of plot confusion, are also named Anthipholus and Dromio.
When the wife of the Ephesians--Adriana and her servant Luce--mistake the two strangers for their husband, complications arise, as is expected.
Though the couples eventually sort out who's who, after Adriana's sister Luciana and the Syracuse Antipholus admit their love, the results have produced a plot paradigm that may not make for profound revelations but lots of comedic schtick.

They date from an era when the books for Broadway shows were often little more than an aggregation of jokes and stock situations slapped together to provide a frame for a series of songs.
"Boys From Syracuse," with its roots in Shakespeare, was probably more sturdily constructed than most, and the book by George Abbott certainly proved durable enough when the musical was revived Off Broadway in 1963.
Nicky Silver, a specialist in anxiety-laden comedies that, on occasion, spiral giddily into the realm of farce, was certainly a defensible choice to supply a new book, but the results are peculiar, and only fitfully funny.
