Brand New Heavies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Brand New Heavies are an acid jazz and alternative hip hop group formed in 1985 in Ealing, a suburb of London, England.
In April 2006, the Brand New Heavies reunited with N'Dea Davenport and former label Delicious Vinyl.
The album was recorded in New York and London; and the lead single was issued in early May. Following the album's release, the band are scheduled to roll out a 25 city, nationwide tour, in July and August.

As a brand new band, the Heavies didn't know quite what they had on their hands with vocalist N'Dea Davenport; she's only featured on four cuts here, but as it turned out three of them were released as singles and her fiery, soulful vocals wound up being the key to the band's commercial success.
From start to finish, the Brand New Heavies take us on an addictive trip back to a time when the grooves were thick, the writing was sophisticated, and the vocals were genuine, unadulterated soul.
The Heavies would eventually surpass the heights they reached here, but in retrospect the album offers every clue that they were on their way to becoming legends in the Acid Jazz genre.

Pioneers of the London acid-jazz scene, the Brand New Heavies translated their love for the funk grooves of the 1970s into a sophisticated sound which carried the torch for classic soul in an era dominated by hip-hop.
As the Heavies became successful the idea was shelved and all that remained was the Heavies recordings.
The Heavies may now have bigger hits, be bigger stars but they will never be better than they were at the start of the nineties.

Eventually adding a brass section, the Brand New Heavies built a cult following throughout the London club circuit, surviving the shift that saw the rare groove scene fade in the wake of acid house.
A new album, Get Used to It, was released later that year and was followed by a tour of the U.K. and Europe.

When BNH played live in the USA they were greeted by audiences that hadn't seen live funk bands in a long time, but especially impressed were the rap community who saw in the Heavies a band playing grooves that rappers would usually sample from old 70's records.
So impressed with the BNH were legendary funksters and R&B artists like Ray Charles who invited the band to play his 50th anniversary in the music biz, where the Heavies finally met some of their heroes like Stevie Wonder and Ouincy Jones.
The Brand New Heavies had now carved out their niche as one of the finest contemporary soul/dance groups, albeit paving the way for the likes of Jamiroquai, as well as US soul stars D'Angelo, Maxwell, Erykah Badu and a slew of up and coming neo-soul bands.

With Davenport at the fore, the Heavies scored a trio of RandB and dance club top 10 hits in the early '90s but were unable to reach such heights once the soul chanteuse left the fold and was replaced by Siedah Garrett in 1997.
However, it took a new album and an energetic concert to show that while the Heavies may not be brand new, they are back with a vengeance.
Now the Heavies have returned with a much more organic and mature mix of soulful grooves that might not appeal to ADD-addled youngsters, but it'll warm the souls of their parents like a steaming cup of coffee on a cool morning.

The Brand New Heavies were formed in 1985 by old friends Jan Kincaid (drums/keyboards), Andrew Levy (bass), and Simon Bartholomew (guitar), as an instrumental band in the London suburb of Ealing.
Rehearsing in standard garage band fashion, the group, (then named Brothers International), were able to properly harness their budding funk abilities and in 1987, re-named themselves The Brand New Heavies, supplementing their instrumental-only trio with horns and vocalist N'Dea Davenport, creating a passionate blend of musicians dedicated to fusing soul and funk seamlessly.
