Falstaff visits Brentford in the Shakespearean play, and 'The Rising of the Moon' by Gladys Mitchell is a romantic novel set in Brentford.
Brentford's location in West London, within easy reach of the BBC, Sky and Teddington Studios makes it handy for outside scenes.

Sci-fi author Robert Rankin, famed author of the Brentford Trilogy, and the only person guaranteed to make Terry Pratchett laugh (by the discworld author’s own admission) has banked much of his career on stretching it just that far.
The basic idea behind the latest (earliest?) instalment of the series is that history is based on lies - with the supposedly fictional Victorian era stories such as those by Jules Verne and HG Wells represent the planet’s true history - but were destroyed at the turn of the century by witches, from Chiswick.
It was also during this time that he became a part of Brentford’s most noted community - drinking in its many pubs, from where he found much of his inspiration for the many references to the town that are to be found throughout his novels.

That was the end of the stall but we had some great games of golf which turned up as allotment golf in The Brentford Triangle because we got thrown off all the golf courses for bad behavior so we had to invent a new form of golf called allotment golf.
The reason for the third Brentford book was that I had done a two book deal after the first one so the publishers wanted another Brentford book.

 The Richmond Review, Book Review, The Brentford Chainstore Massacre by Robert Rankin
They are all set in Brentford, and centre around the lives of Jim Pooley and John Omally: a pair of happy-go-lucky men who always seem to get involved in the fight of Good against Evil.
From this premise much is drawn, including mental time travel, a search for the Brentford Scrolls, a couple of fights and parties and even a quick soujourn into Penge by an all too direct descendant of Christ who also takes part in the sub-plot of the book.
Towards the end of the book, the reader is left in suspense as to how Rankin is going to tie up all of the plots, something he does in a typical (and spectacular) Deus Ex Machina manner that does not disappoint.

Whilst some readers may baulk at this treatment of their firmly held beliefs, I find this to be a refreshing change and a great antidote to the reams of paper that are wasted on printing “serious” books of this nature.
The writing is both verbose, and at once tight which, added to the comic value of the book, creates an effect which one might not ordinarily expect from the genre.
Rankin’s use of language in The Brentford Triangle continues where The Antipope left off, lending an air of grace and dignity to the absurd and silly.

There's another side of the Brentford series that's equally amusing, given some of the circles that I've circulated in, there's a number of inside jokes about the esoteric occult.
Which gets layered in with bawdy humor, body humor, and a pair of lads who really would like nothing better to do than sit at the bar and have a beer while avoiding hard work.
