[Audiophile Asylum] CD Reviews: Billy Joel   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Usually, I don't care for entire Joel albums, but this album only has one song on it I don't care for and that is When in Rome which just seems a bit irritating to be blunt.
I guess Billy didn't know his wife quite as well as he claimed in power driven opener, That's Not Her Style where he boldly proclaims the press doesn't know his wife as well he does, because she's his woman.
I thought maybe the problem was bad mastering on previous albums, but I bought a remastered version of his Live album from Russia and it sounds just as bad as the original release in the presentation.

 Billy Joel
Billy Joel returned in 1977 with The Stranger, which was his real commercial breakthrough, and one of those albums in which you've heard almost every song on the radio before.
Billy Joel soon found himself in a boatload of success, that would continue for the rest of the 70's and into the early 80's.
Billy Joel seems to take a dive into his youth (though he's actually a bit too young to have lived through the doo-wop age as a teenager) and write an album full of soulful and slick songs that carry a very cool vibe.

Billy Joel Tickets - Billy Joel Concert Tickets
Billy Joel never was a critic's favorite, the pianist emerged as one of the most popular singer/songwriters of the latter half of the '70s.
On the cover of the band's eponymous album, both billy Joel and Small were dressed as barbarians; in an interview on the back of the album, Joel claimed to forget the name of his previous band and stated that he only sweated two things perfecting his sound and the war in Southeast Asia.
In the spring of 1980, Billy Joel released Glass Houses, theoretically a harder-edged album that was a response to the punk and new wave movement.

Greg Sandow -- Billy Joel's Classical Album
Joel's piece, the top voice is just a melody, and the bass not much more than an accompaniment.
Joel can't play his music himself because his piano technique, sensational for rock 'n' roll, isn't good enough for classical work.) He says he hopes that he at least can lead his fans to classical composers.
And the strongest question to ask Billy Joel is why he doesn't build his pop style into classical forms -- why, to write classical music, he wants to use styles so far from anything he's ever done.

 Billy Joel: Fyfeopedia Music Reviews
Joel's classical background shines through in the beautiful baroque-like 'Summer, Highland Falls' and the melodic themes of 'Prelude/An Angry Young Man', while 'Miami 2017' is one of Joel's best rockers (admittedly, that's not a particularly difficult achievement).
Billy Joel was a favourite of mine almost ten years ago and I started my Billy Joel review regime expecting to hand out a lot of two and three star ratings, but I've found the mid-section of his catalogue very pleasant.
Therefore, Joel is a natural artist to anthologise; it's no surprise that plenty of his songs are still on overtime on pop radio, and I prefer Joel to almost any other mainstream hit maker of his late seventies-early eighties era.

Bridge by Joel Billy (lyrics & reviews)
Billy said he had tried to write with others before; but it always proved unfruitful, because they would always come up with cosmic words that didn't sound natural.
The final "bridge" is that the songs on this album hark back to Billy's earlier albums, such as, "52nd Street" and "The Stranger".
The music video shows Billy and his band performing the song for a crowd surrounding the building in which the performance is taking place.

Billy's always had the rare talent of making simplicity endure the test of time, but i find the songs on this album FAR more MUSICALLY interesting than the dragging, monotone strums of "Captain Jack" and "Only the Good Die Young" and "Tell Her About It".
None of Billy Joel's recordings will ever be considered a "desert island disc" for me, his albums are just too short and simple, and I think for more than a few of his fans, there's a nostalgic bug (which there's nothing wrong with).
For Billy Joel, the 1980s were an era where Billy Joel began to explore new musical paths that differed very much from his classic 1970s material.

The album is 40 minutes long and consists of seven songs between 4 to 8 minutes and all of them are very melodic and sometimes beautiful, but overall the album feels slow and a bit boring.
Oh yeah, the album is heavy on nature mirroring the growth of the spirit of man. Greenfingered metaphors abound throughout as this track hauntingly similar to some of the works by Anthony Phillips introduces the next song, "The Flower".
The first two albums with their side-long grooves of cosmic mostly instrumental riffing are the best, the ultimate in trippy space rock, like an enhancement of the Ash Ra Tempel sound.

At first I thought this was a Billy Joel song exclusive to GHv3, but I discovered from reading the notes in the booklet that the song is by Carole King & Gerry Goffin.
Billy Joel sings "Hey Girl" with the golden-throated vocals which were common during the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Unless Billy Joel composes sufficient music which is performed by concert pianists and other classically trained musicians, do not expect GHv4.

Billy's 1980 opus was such a huge hit that it's easy to forget how enduring his songs really are.
The album's focal point is the single "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," which doesn't actually rock much at all and is one of his most critically reviled songs.
The album as a whole is one of Billy Joel's most listenable albums.

 Bridge by Billy Joel CD
Billy Joel is a man of varied career stages--the piano man, the angry young man, the finger-poppin' Tin Pan Alley songwriter, the serious composer.
And with THE BRIDGE acting as a "bridge" between Joel's Tin Pan Alley style and his more contemporary sound, one of this 1986 album's main charms is the pop craft that brought us such gems as "A Matter Of Trust," "This Is The Time," "Modern Woman" and "Baby Grand," a delectable duet with Ray Charles.
Unmistakably mature and containing some of his best songs to date, THE BRIDGE brings together a batch of songs that truly mark Joel's growth as a songwriter and forges a solid footing for the several releases that followed

It was now time for our presentation, so we headed for the conference room, gave our CD to the guy running the sound board, and passed out the "top 100" sheets.
Our book went over big with the room, and the questions were the typical, "Why is this song so high or low, and where is this song?" We had a great time, and the presentation ran over by a half-hour, much to the chagrin of the guy who followed us!
He was accompanied on sax by Mark Rivera from Ringo's and Billy Joel's band.
