The railway bridge over the Rhine was built during the first World War, for the purpose of bringing more troops and war materials to the western front.
On March the 7th, 1945, the Americans managed to capture this bridge, before the German troops were able to blow it up.

One problem in defending the bridge at Remagen was the constant changing of the command responsibility for it.
Along the way to Remagen, Scheller ran low on gas, had to detour around American tanks, was separated from his men and the radio, and did not reach the bridge until after 11:00 a.m.
On the Remagen side of the bridge Mott's engineers were doing everything possible to fill in the big crater and the approach and get the bridge prepared enough for tanks and other vehicles to cross.

The Bridge of Remagen - Between Truth and Legend: Contemporary witnesses remember March of 1945   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The dramatically staged movie is right with respect to the fact that this strategically highly important bridge was captured by the allied forces and made the quick transfer of troops to the right side of the Rhine river possible.
The gist is that the bridge was captured by US troops, but not in the way the movie "The Bridge of Remagen" shows it.
It was a senseless and insane war that pulled both Remagen and Erpel into it and placed them into world history at the "Bridge of Remagen" against their will.

Based on actual incidents during the final Allied advance on Germany in March 1945, the story focuses on the U.S. Army's exhausted 27th Armored Infantry, assigned to seize the bridge at Remagen, on the Rhine River, to prevent 50,000 German troops from retreating to safety.
The film slightly modifies history by showing the Americans as wanting to blow up the Ludendorf railway bridge at Remagen to trap a retreating German army, that is not how things happened in reality but this little bit of "Hollywood history" does not detract from the movie.
The Bridge at Remagen is an excellent World War II movie based on a true story.

Set during the spring of 1945, The Bridge At Remagen is about the end of the war when Hitler's scorched earth policy demanded that nothing be left for the Allies when Germany was defeated.
This group, led by Lieutenant Hartman (Segal) initially intends to destroy the bridge themselves with the aid of air power, but their commanding officer (Marshall) and the ambitious Major Barnes (Dillman) decide that it would be far more useful if the Allies were to take control of the bridge.
His basic flaw as a director of character and dialogue means that all the pretensions of The Bridge At Remagen are cruelly highlighted and that it only comes alive when the special effects people are given their head with the pyrotechnics.

The story of the Remagen Bridge is on one hand, the story of the fight to capture it as well as to defend or destroy it.
The action at the bridge is a moving human story and a brilliant stroke of military daring.
The bridge is cool, IMO it needs to be worked so that firefights go bothways, both teams can push each other back across the bridge, instead of just having axis sitting defending and the allies going to them.

Meanwhile on his way to the bridge Krueger (Vaughn) gets stopped at a roadblock where he sees a fellow German officer executed by the SS for retreating… This disturbs him because he is a professional soldier and hardly a Nazi.

EDIT - BTW, simplistic, heavy handed though it is, I quite like The Bridge at Remagen; though I suspect it's to more to do with admiring Ben Gazzara and George Segal than anything else; and maybe the fact that I caught it in the early '70s.
The Bridge at Remagen makes a very simple point; that Robert Vaughan's German officer cares that civilians are caught up in a battle and may get killed, and for that he pays the price.
It is supposed to be a combat movie about conquering the all-important bridge over the Rhine but its anti-war message is so much emphasized that that important feat is somewhat negated and you're starting to ask yourself how on earth did the Americans win the war with such demoralized troops.

Therein lies the drama as both sides prepare to destroy the bridge for strategic reasons.
The Bridge at Remagen was strongly influenced by the war epic, The Longest Day (1962) and has a similar narrative structure which crosscuts between the opposing forces as their actions lead to the final confrontation.
