"The Brittas Empire" was such a wild, silly show, it desperately needed someone to be the voice of sanity.
IMO Chris Barrie's portrayal of Gordon Brittas is the one true rival to John Cleese's portrayal of Basil Fawlty.
They should've left Brittas dead and then cancel the show, but instead they had to milk it for all they could and as a result it turned sour.

Although you could label The Brittas Empire as an event comedy, say much in the same vein as Fawlty Towers due to the "man in charge creates havoc" scenario, what it all comes down to in the end is the characters.
Where Brittas uses a textbook approach that alienates others his wife opts for a simple yet practical approach that gets the job done without causing undue stress to those around her.

Except that the setting for The Brittas Empire is a leisure centre, not the sales floor of a stationery wholesaler, and where The Office is uncomfortable to watch for all the right reasons, much of this is just painful.
Clearly Brittas is not supposed to be likeable, but the way in which his long-suffering, adulterous and Valium-addicted wife (Philippa Haywood) discusses him with her female confidantes implies a well-intentioned bungler who deserves our sympathy, if not our respect.
Unfortunately, Barrie is about the only thing The Brittas Empire has going for it, apart from the two female supporting actresses (Haywood, and Julia St. John) who bravely struggle to play their roles straight.

It’s not that The Brittas Empire is really bad - well, that’s part of the problem during this opening series - but it doesn’t help that the show hasn’t aged very well.
I still love to sit and watch repeats of Fawlty, but The Brittas Empire is a lot harder to swallow and I doubt I’ll be re-watching this first part of the box set.
Whereas Fawlty’s defining characteristic is that he loses his rag at the slightest provocation, the crux of Brittas’ character is that he tends to remain annoyingly calm and relaxed, whatever the situation.

I know Gordonwas supposed to be the annoying one, and she was supposed to be'normal',but I found her unbelievably irritating.
She was almost pathetic in a way.It sounds harsh, but her actions and lines were all very similar-i.esimper over Laura, make fun of Brittas, and crave anti-depressants.
