Mindjack Film - The Brothers Grimm
Along the way, the scholarly Jacob collects a rich repository of local lore that, if the film’s conceit is to be believed, form the basis of their famous collection of fairy tales.
A key relationship in the film (the "love interest") is handled inexcusably badly, with no chemistry or conviction between Ledger and Lena Headey, playing the mysterious local girl Angelika.
The film ultimately falls on the weakness, not of its story, but of its storytelling.

Even though he seems to know from the start of the film that he and his family are still in danger from the mob, he doesn't seem concerned about bringing some poor kid into the line of fire.
Also, unless I missed it the film never reveals why adoption is a necessity for Eddie and his wife in the first place; the fact that we see them sleeping in separate beds may be a clue.
Since this film was made in the mid-50s, I can't help but think that some studio suit thought they were being clever by inserting that in as a jab to the new mode of competition.

UGO.com DVD - The Brothers Grimm DVD Review
The visually striking film left a bit to be desired in the narrative department, so it was pushed as a "different kind of summer blockbuster," and got lost in the summer shuffle.
Gilliam mumbles his way through the film commentary, as well as through the numerous deleted scenes (lamenting his wastefulness), and offers a few tasty tidbits and some rare gems (the first of which is his admission that he embarked on the project because he was unemployed..
Kudos to Gilliam for actually being able to talk through the majority of the film with more insight than the usual "here we see..." fare and his desire to release a director's cut is tempting; still the overall package suffers from the same issues as the theatrical release: the inability to grasp its full potential.

Screentalk Film Review - The Brothers Grimm
I know that a lot happened to this film since production, you can really feel the choppy editing in the final act, but it feels like there was never anything for Gilliam to grab onto, regardless of the long delay to the film's release.
The film could have been an interesting dissection of the way writers of fiction, and, by extension, film, use reality to both cheat and reward their audience.
As the brothers are forced to investigate a real legend, the Queen of Mirrors (Monica Bellucci) and her kidnapping of small children, the film becomes shockingly dull.

Brothers explores what drives men to infidelity, power struggles in relationships, issues of misogyny, sexual frustration and the reasons men fear intimacy and commitment.
We also see from the film's rich subplots that the men's approach to love and women is largely influenced by their upbringing.
Despite the serious elements of the film, there is plenty of comedy to lighten the drama, especially from Bellamy's Brian, whose stream of bad relationships are literal battles of the sexes, and also from Derrick (Hughley) and his sexual negotiations with his wife.

The Blues Brothers is a 1980 musical/comedy film, directed by John Landis and starring John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as "Joliet" Jake and Elwood Blues, The Blues Brothers, and their supporting band.
The film culminates in a live concert, during which Cab Calloway opens with "Minnie the Moocher", and then the Blues Brothers perform two songs before escaping from the surrounding police cordon with the timely help of a record executive.
Literally seconds after paying the bill to the assessor clerk (Spielberg), the brothers are arrested, and the film ends with the entire band, who have all been imprisoned in the same prison, playing Jailhouse Rock for their fellow inmates.

Jake, on the other hand, is more of a dreamer, though his fantasies are tinged with guilt from a childhood incident involving the purchase of some "magic beans" for the pair's dying sister.
The film is redolent with images like these, and the landscape -- both physical and psychological -- just screams for Gilliam's trademark battle between wild imagination and stifling mechanization.
The film would have benefited immeasurably if it had the discipline to drop a few of its concepts -- no matter how tantalizing they may have appeared -- and honed the remainder to sharper points.

Burns wrote and directed the film on a shoestring, but if his stamping ground is determinedly working-class Irish-American, the tone is closer to the gentle Uptown ironies of Woody Allen than to Hal Hartley or Jim Jarmusch.

Slant Magazine - Film Review: The Brothers Grimm   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Long-delayed by Miramax's Harvey Weinstein because of (alleged) "creative differences" with its director, Gilliam's first film in seven years is a fairy tale origin story in which titular 18th-century storytellers Will (Matt Damon) and Jake (Heath Ledger) Grimm are itinerant charlatans who bilk superstitious nitwits by posing as mystical creature exterminators.
Jake is a dreamer with faith in the fantastic while brother Will, still smarting over Jake's childhood sale of the family cow for magic beans, is a dogged pragmatist.
The film's aesthetic is what might be called "storybook grotesquery," a quirky visual and narrative combination of monstrous caricatures, low-brow slapstick gags (highlighted by an off-screen bit about mass spitting), and a supernatural-tinged world whose charm is due, in part, to its menacing deformity.

The film would tell the story of brothers Jacob (Heath Ledger) and Wilhelm's (Matt Damon) transformation from con artists to heroes as the fairy tales they used to con people with turn out to be real.
This looked to be the perfect film for Gilliam's style and had it been made during a time when his head was a bit clearer it probably could have been.
The film takes forever to get to the point and when it does it fails to take off on the rollercoaster ride that is a trademark with previous Gilliam films.

In the early 1800s, two German brothers were looking for stable, well-paying jobs in order to support their younger siblings after their parents' deaths, so they became librarians.
Perhaps due to their own dark past, most of the supposed kiddie tales the brothers collected are twisted and disturbing, driven by envy, vengeance, and the craving for tender young flesh.
It's rich fodder for a film, and Terry Gilliam (who has already taken a crack at fairy tales with Jabberwocky and the Monty Python franchise) adds lots of humor to his revisionist version.

The Trades - Movie Review: The Brothers Grimm
That being said I have to say, sadly, that I was disappointed with his new film, “The Brothers Grimm.” That disappointment isn’t because the story wasn’t mostly witty and clever, it is because the film lacks the “heart” of his earlier works.
Given that the stories of the Brothers Grimm are among our most cherished works of fiction, I was surprised that Terry Gilliam and Ehren Krueger chose to portray them in the film as con artists and rascals, rather than paying them homage by characterizing them as heroic and honorable men.
The film was shot entirely in Prague, Czech Republic, and that was certainly a good choice as the locations we visit throughout feel authentic, but some of the dialogue is straight out of our early 21st century world, and that is definitely a mistake.

The Brothers depicts a glamorous world in which everyone is good-looking and well dressed; the number of characters makes it hard to delve into anyone's life with any depth, but the actors are engaging and the script makes an effort to look at the "battle of the sexes" from both sides.
The film deals with this issue without any discretion at all with a wife refusing, being unable to give head to her husband - note well it is because her mummy told her it was disgusting.

Watching "The Brothers," the highly anticipated beefcake fest, you get the feeling that writer-director Gary Hardwick took all those Terry McMillan dramas too much to heart.
The film's bright light is Gabrielle Union in the role of Denise Johnson, a photographer who becomes romantically involved with Jackson.
It doesn't quite undermine the little progress cinematic Black romance has made with films like "Love and Basketball" or "Sprung," but it reminds us that the struggle for convincing stories and characters is not easy, and continues.
