The Brothers Grimm - explorefaith Film
To summarize briefly, the film is about Jake and Will Grimm, two brothers who travel the German countryside during the late 1800s conning ignorant peasants into believing they can rid their villages of enchanted creatures.
Then again, perhaps this is the brothers’ big opportunity to prove they are more than mere charlatans; a chance to make up for all the times they ripped people off and perform a public service instead.
This could have been a brilliant film, especially if you consider all the possibilities that arise when you open the door for the Grimm brothers’ yarns to morph with reality into an unsettling mobius strip of a story.

The Brothers Grimm, director Terry Gilliam's return to the big screen after the disaster that was his attempt at The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (captured in every tragic detail in the documentary Lost In La Mancha), didn't go over that well at the box office.
The visually striking film left a bit to be desired in the narrative department, so it was pushed as a "different kind of summer blockbuster," and got lost in the summer shuffle.
Gilliam mumbles his way through the film commentary, as well as through the numerous deleted scenes (lamenting his wastefulness), and offers a few tasty tidbits and some rare gems (the first of which is his admission that he embarked on the project because he was unemployed..

 Brothers Grimm, The (2005): Reviews
The Brothers Grimm reeks of compromise, of a brilliant fantasist losing his footing and nerve and getting hopelessly gummed up in the cruel machinery of big-budget blockbuster filmmaking.
Although The Brothers Grimm is partly an inventive fantasy, it's also a cluttered, jangly action picture, and there's too much noise and commotion for Gilliam's subtler ideas to really resonate.
On the whole, The Brothers Grimm is a mess; a formerly daring director’s attempt to cash in on big studio backing even after the rug has been pulled out from under him.

Bits and pieces of various Grimm stories are thrown together in an attempt to convince viewers that all these ideas could have come from one journey, resulting only in confusion and disjointedness.

Eventually, they are pressed back into service as exorcists, but this time, the enemy is real, and the Grimms must use all their skills to escape death at the hands of either the evil spirits or the French.
A key relationship in the film (the "love interest") is handled inexcusably badly, with no chemistry or conviction between Ledger and Lena Headey, playing the mysterious local girl Angelika.

The fatal flaw of The Brothers Grimm, is that Gilliam never found something to latch his fantastically twisted vision of the cinematic world on in Ehren Kruger's unmemorable Shrek-like take on the legendary brothers.
The film could have been an interesting dissection of the way writers of fiction, and, by extension, film, use reality to both cheat and reward their audience.

The film isn't about the real Brothers Grimm; it's a fairy tale within a fairy tale set during the early Enlightenment, when superstition and mythology still ran rampant.

Putting Terry Gilliam, a director renowned for his fantastical vision, in charge of a story about the Brothers Grimm, siblings known for their wondrous fairy tales, would appear a perfect match.
Produced by Dimension Films, who are best known as purveyors of horror, The Brothers Grimm certainly plays up the darker, more macabre aspects of the brothers' fairy tales, including as it does elements of Red Riding Hood, Hansel & Gretel and Rapunzel.

Slant Magazine - Film Review: The Brothers Grimm
Long-delayed by Miramax's Harvey Weinstein because of (alleged) "creative differences" with its director, Gilliam's first film in seven years is a fairy tale origin story in which titular 18th-century storytellers Will (Matt Damon) and Jake (Heath Ledger) Grimm are itinerant charlatans who bilk superstitious nitwits by posing as mystical creature exterminators.
Jake is a dreamer with faith in the fantastic while brother Will, still smarting over Jake's childhood sale of the family cow for magic beans, is a dogged pragmatist.
The film's aesthetic is what might be called "storybook grotesquery," a quirky visual and narrative combination of monstrous caricatures, low-brow slapstick gags (highlighted by an off-screen bit about mass spitting), and a supernatural-tinged world whose charm is due, in part, to its menacing deformity.

The Brothers Grimm: (Dario Marianelli) Whenever you approach a Terry Gilliam film, whether you're a film reviewer, a soundtrack reviewer, or an everyday moviegoer, you have to expect yourself to be transported into a macabre world of fantasy where terrible things happen simply because they're funny and unexpected.

In his first film since 1998's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Terry Gilliam directs from a self-consciously phantasmagoric script by Ehren Kruger (The Ring Two and The Skeleton Key) in which the Brothers Grimm are playfully rewritten into their own fables.
But soon the brothers encounter a truly enchanted forest, and the film quickly accelerates into a variety of fantastic surroundings and surreal visuals that only Gilliam can produce.
