The three brothers McMullen have been raised by Mom and the Church in the grand tradition of Irish Catholic duality.
McMullen announces to her son Barry (Edward Burns) that now that the rotter is dead, she is leaving immediately for Ireland to return to a man she has loved for 35 years.

And if you thought that was complicated enough, you're forgetting that the Brothers McMullen were raised good Irish Catholics, and of course this makes all their questions about love and sex doubly vexing.

Aside from one or two scenes, The Brothers McMullen was shot entirely with available light, and, to save money, Burns never requested permits to shoot on certain locations — he simply snuck onto trains or into buildings with his camera under his coat, shot the scene quickly, and left.

Some people have thought Bahns (who was the real-life girlfriend of Burns at the time) was not a particularly good actress, but I have thought her performances in both this and "She's The One" were fine.

I thought the brothers did O.K. in their relationships to others, but I was a little disappointed that none of the brothers lacked the intellectual depth and sophistication to sort out and resolve their inner conflicts.
