Review | 'Brown Bunny' | Arizona Daily Star
This is a movie to watch, analyze and absorb, although "The Brown Bunny" isn't a movie you watch so much as survive.
Bud seems to be a hard, angry man, but he reveals a softer side whenever he's near rabbits, which he refers to only as "bunnies." Eyes lighted up, he observes a bunny at a senile old couple's house and obsesses over cubicle-caged bunnies at a pet shop.
The connection between Bud and the bunnies - which is gradually hinted at in bits, then blossoms at the end - is the great mystery of the film.

I still dragged my feet going to see it, not just because of Gallo's public behavior, but because that same hostility was all over his first film as director, "Buffalo 66." That picture felt like an art-house put-on, with the audience as the butt of the joke.

 Brown Bunny, The (2004): Reviews
The Brown Bunny is still not a complete success -- it is odd and off-putting when it doesn't want to be -- but as a study of loneliness and need, it evokes a tender sadness.
In brief, The Brown Bunny, however antagonistic and borderline tedious, is an art work of sorts, and Gallo himself, though an egomaniac of staggering solemnity-a priest of art longing for a cult-is not a fake.
Recently I purchased the film, being a complete narcissist just as Brown Bunny, Vincent Gallo is. And, I was absolutely floored by how he was able to polish this film into a gem.

Hyperbolically dismissed at Cannes, cut by a much resented quarter, and resurrected into lukewarm possibility by the public's fascination with graphic sexuality, The Brown Bunny is too tame for the tsking and too unsubstantial for the fatwas.
He is Bud Clay, the name self-consciously, but unsuccessfully, evocative, making his way across the land to a woman named Daisy (Chloë Sevigny) and what was or might have been.
Bud races in circles, aimlessly: no focus, no win, and then moves through a studied barrenness, east to west: insistently floral imagery, like the titular bunny, the promise of a fertility unrealized.

Vincent Gallo's The Brown Bunny is among the most tedious and pretentious films I have ever had the misfortune to encounter.
Such qualities, regrettably, are not ameliorated by The Brown Bunny's awkward, often inane dialogue, which gives the impression that the protagonist is intended to be mentally defective, and its clumsy narrative, which has all the subtlety of the work of a twelve year old.
While watching the film, it occurred to me that I was, perhaps, wrong in looking at it as an attempted dramatic work, that it may actually be either a joke, a parody of low budget student films, or a daring scam, a flippant effort to fleece potential moviegoers interested in something that has generated controversy.
