Such is the case with the 1994 film, The Browning Version.
While there have been several versions of the play that hit the big screen, the 1994 version, starring the wonderfully talented Albert Finney as Andrew Crocker-Harris, a Classics literature teacher who feels the weight of the world on his shoulders.
I haven't seen the first version of the movie (made decades ago) to compare but Finney was excellent in this drama about the decline of education in Western society.

filmcritic.com Movie Review: The Browning Version
I won't spoil the ending except to say that it's unexpected but far from corny, and myriad films from Dead Poets Society to Scent of a Woman owe The Browning Version a debt of gratitude for it.
Directed by Anthony Asquith, The Browning Version is a study of a man who's long since come to terms with his mediocrity and who is almost too willingly slipping into the shadows.
Check it out on the new Criterion Collection release, which features commentary from historian Bruce Eder, an old interview with Redgrave, and an interview with Mike Figgis, who directed the 1994 remake of the film with Albert Finney.

In recent years, he has essayed scene-stealing turns in Miller's Crossing (1990), The Browning Version (1994) and Erin Brockovich (2000), and his perfectly pitched performance as Churchill in The Gathering Storm (2002) won him an Emmy.
His film debut was in The Entertainer (1960) but he made his name as the embittered rebel Arthur Seaton in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960).
Albert Finney's career is synonymous with the Free Cinema directors, Tony Richardson and Karel Reisz.
