The Butter Battle Book - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The book was adapted into an animated TV special in 1989 by filmmaker Ralph Bakshi.
The main dispute between the two cultures is that on one side of the wall people eat their bread with the butter side upwards, while on the other side they eat their bread butter-side down.
This book was written during the Cold War era, and reflects the concerns of the time, especially the perceived possibility that all life on earth could be destroyed in a nuclear war.

This book is about 2 groups, the Yooks and the Zooks, who live separated only by a wall, and are very similar except for the way they butter their bread.
The book is about passing on prejudice and hatred to children, when grandfather reveals the terrible bread-buttering practices of those who live on the other side.
This book tries to show the folly of war, specifically the cold war, and arms races, by all of Dr. Seuss's usual tricks: the creation of new words for objects representative of things in our own world, and beautiful, colorful environments which act as twisted mirror images of our own world.

"Butter Battle" was a departure for Dr. Seuss, a serious book about the nature of war and the nuclear arms race.
The book also, however, can be viewed as showing the necessity of arms races, since, as the book implies, if one side doesn't match the threat of the other, than the other will strike.
The Butter Battle Book is a wonderful lesson, written in a way that even a child could understand the concept of war, see how differences in people can cause foolish problems, and use their imaginations.

Seuss’s books are mainstays in the elementary classroom and media center, very little has been published in the print world that synthesizes the myriad of dynamic activities dedicated to utilizing this literature to its maximum potential.
The introduction to this useful book explains that it was designed for elementary school teachers and children’s librarians “to create enthusiasm and excitement in the rhyme and rhythm of literature, as well as to reinforce early reading and language skills.” Activities are divided into two groups: Primary (K-2) and Intermediate (3-5).

The essence of the dispute is the question which side bread should be buttered on, with the Yooks buttering the top side and the Zooks the bottom.
The adherents of that movement--Dr. Seuss evidently among them--see the U.S.-Soviet rivalry as an unfortunate misunderstanding over not very important cultural differences, e.g., which side bread should be buttered on; a misunderstanding fueled by a senseless arms race driven by technological imperatives alone.
