The Cabaret of Dr Caligari was a BBC Radio 4 comedy series first broadcast in 1991.
Starring John Woodvine as Dr Caligari, Victoria Wicks as Anthrax and Sylvester McCoy as Snuff, The Cabaret of Dr Caligari is a macabre comedy about the goings on at a night club owned by Dr Caligari.
The title of the series is a reference to the 1919 German Expressionist film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

Strangest of all is Dr. Caligari (Madeleine Reynal) herself, a statuesque beauty whose professional interests have a distinctly lurid cast.
CALIGARI's relationship with THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, a classic of German Expressionist filmmaking, is tenuous.
Caligari poses with the accessories of her profession: hypodermic needles, an electroshock apparatus that looks more like an electric chair than any therapeutic device, and a hot pink lab dress fit to raise the comatose if not the dead.

 Caligari review
Caligari himself - Darrel Blackburn - resisted the temptation to overact in this stylish role, keeping instead a tightly controlled persona which was a marvel of economy.
Another tiny visual joke was Munch's "Scream" as the cover illustration on a handbill announcing the death of the Chief Clerk.
In one instance, the company processed through a self-supported curtain, only to at once re-emerge as though entering Caligari's tent at the carnival; A tiny moment, but one so skillfully executed that however simple, it became a true coup-de-theatre.

If you've suffered through some of the hack work Jess Franco cranked out in the last two decades, you may find it difficult to believe that he once took some pride in his craft and evinced a certain mastery of cinematic technique, as well as a modicum of discipline.
Despite the title, it bears no direct relation to the creepy and perverse opus, "The Awful Dr Orloff", which put the director on the map back in the early 60s.
It builds up a strong pathos for the title character, thanks to a subtle, wordless portrayal that evokes Cesar in 'Cabinet of Dr Caligari' and Christiane in 'Eyes without a Face' (such homages were a Franco specialty).

Fritz Lang and his Dr. Mabuse films
DAS TESTAMENT DES DR MABUSE (1933) was Lang’s last German film for nearly three decades and can be considered a true climax to 12 extremely successful years of film making which forever left their mark on German film history.
Likewise, the film is set in the semi-glamourous world of cabaret and gambling, with women the all too willing tools of Mabuse.
However, when Brauner came back with the idea of a remake of THE LAST WILL OF DR MABUSE, Lang was instead tempted to tackle a third variation on the Mabuse theme, almost 30 years after the second one.

At a cabaret that night Dr. Orlof (Howard Vernon) is in his regular box, romancing a beautiful chorine with soft words, large jewels and strong wine.

This would continue to be his M.O. through over four decades and 160 features in every genre -- probably a lot more, considering his high output of hardcore flicks in the '70s, plus a lot of reworked and re-titled material, much of it done under any one of his dozens of pseudonyms.

Filtered through writer Alan Gilbey's warped mind, what emerged was this extravaganza - four of the nastiest types that inhabited London at the time (late 80s) - the vandal, the yuppie, the DJ and the Tory politician - were invited (gold-edged invitations) to a tent where Dr. Caligari sets the process in motion.

Saying that it is Maddin's most accessible film yet does not begin to describe the experimental filmmaker's affinity for opaque enigmas.
But combine a relatively intelligible narrative - involving a Depression-era contest to find the tune of the title - a darkly ironic sensibility and Maddin's trademark cubist and lo-tech, high-contrast monochromatic visual palette and you get a film that conjures both "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" and "Cabaret."
Maddin is a self-taught filmmaker with the primitivist style of early silent films.
