  Capeman Book - Press Release
After months of corresponding with Salvador Agron, Jacoby was so impressed with the Capeman's writing that he promised to help him write his autobiography.
Beginning with that promise, CONVERSATIONS WITH THE CAPEMAN retraces Agron's life as Jacoby uncovered it through visits with Sal's family, trips to Puerto Rico and mostly through hundreds of letters and jail house conversations with Salvador.
It was the summer between high school and college, and the story was all over the newspapers and on television.

Capeman was far from the best and even further from the worst.
With the demise of the failed CAPEMAN, we ought to be thankful for a couple things it did, in fact, accomplish while drawing a couple lessons too few neophytes year after year have been willing to learn.
One of the main reasons Capeman flopped is because the songs have second rate lyrics.

The Capeman   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
The Capeman is based on the true story of a young man who was involved in a gang fight in which two innocent teenagers were killed.
The tabloid press of the day fired up its readers with the tale of the caped killer, who was soon caught, and scornfully told the press that, for all he cared, his mother could watch him fry in the electric chair.
Ednita Nazario as the Capeman's forgiving and always-loving mother provides a calm center for the musical, and holds together this tricky story of redemption by providing a model of principle, strength and unshakable morality.

Records: Paul Simon weaves a multitextured 'Capeman' | Jan, 30 1998
The songs, which all come from Simon's new musical The Capeman, outline the true story of Salvador Agron, an immigrant from Puerto Rico who was sentenced to the electric chair at the age of 16 for the murder of two white boys in New York City in 1959.
His gang was called the Vampires, and he wore a red cape, prompting the tabloid press to refer to him as the "The Capeman." Because he showed no remorse for the murders, the press portrayed him as symbolic of evil and the collapse of society.
However, Songs From The Capeman is unlike anything Simon has done previously, an assemblage of diverse musical styles and dramatic perspectives.

Playbill News: Playbill Poll: The Capeman Controversy
If Capeman were filled with gratuitous scenes depicting the victims' violent deaths, then, one might argue the show is exploiting the victims and being insensitive to the feelings of the victims still-living relatives.
As others have stated, The Capeman is not the first time that the theatre has dealt with violent death, nor is it the first time that the theatre has dealt with reality.
In sum, I hope "The Capeman" is a success because I am a Paul Simon fan, but I am still ambivalent about it and I wish he could have lent his incredible talents to another subject other than a real-life murder case.

It's this attitude that has caused Simon, now 56, to be labeled as a control freak, and it's probably why Songs from "The Capeman" is the artist's first new album in six years.
Songs is an hour's worth of music from Simon's forthcoming Broadway musical "The Capeman," based on the true story of a Puerto Rican teenager named Salvador Agron who murdered two people in New York in the summer of 1959 (the nickname stemmed from the fact that Agron was wearing a fl cape at the time).
That said, it's safe to predict that with "The Capeman" and the recent release of a three-CD Simon and Garfunkel box set, the spotlight on Paul Simon is far from dimming.

 Rolling Stone :
Early preview audiences tended to agree, generally citing "The Capeman"'s buoyant score as its primary strength in the difficult story of Salvador Agron, a functionally illiterate Puerto Rican immigrant who killed two Irish youths in 1959 and rehabilitated himself during his 20 years in prison.
But as enjoyable as the music might be, "The Capeman" struggles to overcome the pitfalls of a story whose subtle complexities demand a more thoughtful and complete examination.
On the run from the law in the Arizona desert, Agron experiences an epiphany that leaves him hallucinating before a singing St. Lazarus that can only be described as New Age self-help meets "Easy Rider." By the time Agron is finally paroled, the audience feels just as estranged as he does.

As Simon's "Songs from the Capeman" CD foretold, this musical with book and lyrics by Nobel laureate Derek Walcott, the renowned West Indian poet, is in fact full of heart for the people.
One bit of people's history which "Capeman" retrieves (and the reviewers never stop griping about this) is how the '50s became the '60s, and how the resistance movement of that day shaped Salvador Agron, even while he was locked down on death row.
But by giving us Sal's story and putting his culture on the stage, "The Capeman" dared to give those lucky enough to see it a way of understanding the life of such a man--and the endless and surprising possibilities we have for transforming ourselves and this world.

 The Capeman, a CurtainUp review
Contrary to all the schadenfreude rumors that accompanied The Capeman's unusually long preview run, this new contender in the Broadway sweepstakes has enough jewels sewn into its cape to make it less a disaster than a concept that's more an illustrated concert than a fully realized musical.
Simon's talent for creating memorable rhythms is in evidence throughout the two hours and twenty minutes and the orchestration by Oscar Hernandez are a far cry from the many gratingly over miked sounds typical of many Broadway musicals.

It involves one Salvador Agron who was a member of a Puerto Rican gang called The Vampires, who were on their way to a confrontation with an Irish gang called the Norsemen, when a rumble broke out and two teenaged innocent bystanders were stabbed to death.
Simon was drawn to the story, which suggested a musical setting of 1950s styles and Latin rhythms, which were a part of his own formative years.
In our weekly sound-quality grade, we'll give the CD an "A." The mix is excellent and captures everything well, but dynamic range is restricted a bit by the usual compression in mastering that is typical of major-label CD releases.

When Paul Simon's first and probably last Broadway musical, The Capeman, closed at the Marquis Theatre in March, 1998 after terrible reviews and sixty-eight performances, the headline on the front page of at least one Manhattan tabloid screamed that the show was the biggest flop in history.
Simon states that the story of Agron, who was dubbed "the capeman," represents the time in which he grew up, which wasn't, he is quick to note, anything like Grease or "Happy Days." Simon cryptically states that, like Agron, he is a liar and a truth-seeker.

The Capeman was neither rock musical, pop opera, nor traditional musical theatre piece, but it is filled with haunting music, strange, tantalizingly lovely sequences, and several outstanding songs ("Born in Puerto Rico," "Can I Forgive Him?," "Adios Hermanos," "Time Is An Ocean," "Sunday Afternoon").
The recording serves to remind one that The Capeman was done a disservice by being mounted directly on Broadway.

Salon | Sharps and Flats: Paul Simon
You've probably heard that "The Capeman" is Simon's forthcoming Broadway musical, based on a famous incident from 1959, when 16-year-old Salvador Agron murdered two other New York City teenagers and was sentenced to death himself, then had the sentence commuted.
Considered as Broadway fare, "The Capeman's" songs are either a brilliant new direction for theater music or a disastrous understatement -- it's hard to tell before the show opens.
"Songs From 'The Capeman'" doesn't totally click as a complete album the way Simon's last two did; when it switches out of the '50s idioms of the first half, it loses some steam, and its dips into original-cast-recording mentality distract from the unity of Simon's work.
